King

Being King of Arburg means having the highest position in the whole country. Arburg's 13th King is on the throne now, with the crown prince, William Harold Adley preparing to ascend to the throne on his 21st birthday, as is customary. For a person to become King, they have to be married, which has resulted in Arburg's oldest tradition, the choosing of the King's bride.
The thirteen kings of Arburg have been:
Everly Era
King Harold I
King Harold II
King Harold III
King Arthur
Compton Era
King Richard
Lynn Era
King Jacob
King Kit I
King Kit II
Queen Elodie *
Adley Era
King Lukas
King Joel
King Arthur II
King Ronan
*Queen Elodie is the only woman to ever rule Arburg. Normally, only men qualify as absolute monarchs, but this was a particularly unique scenario. Usually, if no son was around to take the throne, it would go to the King's oldest nephew. Anyone further than a nephew is too far for the crown to go. King Lukas was meant to take the throne directly from his uncle, King Kit II, when he turned 21, but an unexpected tragedy resulted in Kit II dying after only two years on the throne. Lukas was only 5 when this happened, and all the Elders agreed that that was far too young for him to ascend to power. Therefore, it was decided that Elodie, Kit's widow, would rule until the appropriate time came for Lukas to be crowned King. She ruled for 12 years, with more involvement of the Elders than a normal King would have had. This unexpected rule meant that she was also the only ruler that wasn't coronated on the 1st Helena, the first day of the year, another customary tradition of Arburg.

Qualifications

Although the only real qualification a king needs is being in the right bloodline, the heir to the throne spends his life preparing for when he will ascend to the throne. This means lessons on etiquette, politics, history, and many more subjects are a part of his daily routine.

Requirements

The only real requirements are that he must be male and either a son or nephew of the current King. Like I mentioned before, there was only ever one exception to that rule: Queen Elodie.

Appointment

The crown prince is always coronated on the first 1st Helena (the first day of the year) after his 21st birthday. This way, each King often only rules for 18 to 25 years. This ensures that he rules in his absolute prime, and, if all goes well, he is still around to advise his son/nephew when he ascends to the throne, if the ex-monarch wishes to become an Elder. If he chooses not to become an Elder, then he still has enough years of his life left to enjoy them outside of being royalty.

Duties

Their top duty, above all else, is looking out for the well-being of Arburg. To do this, they are the person with the most power in the entire country. In their service, they are advised by the Elders. Ultimately, the King has the most power, but he works very closely with his wife, who has the secon-most power in Arburg. Different duties can be take by the king or queen, that is up to them and the Elders to decide. In the past, the queens often took interest in the social and moral health of Arburg, seeking to change certain social conditions. An example of where this took place is under the rule of Hanna Lynn's husband. She founded several schools for girls, and renovated the Grand Hall to turn it into an orphanage. Read more about queens here: Queen. Overall, though, the queen can choose how many duties she wishes to take care of.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

So far, it has never been necessary to remove a King from power, and the general population is ok with the way things work in Arburg.
