Aosprey
The Aosprey is a diurnal bird of prey that makes its home near the coastal cliffs and shorelines of Copaleila Bay. It is known for its brilliant display of colors which shimmer around it as a violet Aura when it is in flight. A beautiful sea-bird with clean, white feathers and mixed orange or purple plumage, the Aosprey is a beguiling specimen.
As a piscivore, this species is a specialized hunter of fish and Aquan creatures. It has the ability to see the Auras of living creatures, which it uses to remain alert or for tracking schools of fish from the skies. Their eyes are also specially equipped to see their prey within the depths of the ocean. With a swift dive, the Aosprey reaches into the ocean with reversible-jointed talons and snatches prey with lightning reflexes. The scales on the talons of the Aosprey are inverted, allowing the Aosprey to grasp their prey much easier. Fish, sea snakes, crabs, and turtles make up the majority of their diet.
Fishermen of Copaleila Bay historically herald the Aosprey, using domesticated breeds to hunt and return with fish. This symbionic relationship between man and bird is celebrated; the Aosprey is the national bird of Copaleila Cosmo. They are often seen around the piers and docks aiding fishermen and patrolling the skies.
The Aosprey is named after the god of the Sun, Ao, as it is highly associated with light and the morning sun. When an Aosprey dives into the ocean, the resulting cascade creates sparkling rainbows in the wake of the waves.
There is a legend that suggests that the Aosprey is able to mesmerize its prey when underwater. When the Aosprey is submerged, it appears translucent to fish and other Aquan species, but it's Aura remains vibrant- even when underwater. The diving motions it makes are said to resemble a dance of light-waves to the fish, compelling them to halt or delay. Just as when it breaks the waves to dive, when it emerges, it scatters rainbows.
The Aosprey is native to the Copaleila and Colalei regions; as a non-migratory bird, it spends most of its life near the bays and coves. They lay approximately 2-3 eggs inspiring many with their splendid performances and huntin prowess. Aosprey are not kept as pets.
