Lei-Lei Clams

The Lei-Lei Clam is a type of bivalve found within the warmer, tropical seas around the Thrashir-Raejir Strait. They come in various shades of light pink colors, and are typically found near reefs. The Lei-Lei Clam is well-known for a special type of pearl, known as a Lei-Lei Pearl. By filtering the water that forms around Leylines, the Lei-Lei Clam produces an extraordinarily hard stone from the filtered detritus. Infused with magical energy, these pearls are imbued with the "Water" Geo Source energy and are often used in spells with those effects. By drawing in water through the hinges of its bivalve, the Lei-Lei Clam spits these pearls at pearl-divers and predatorial Aquans. Hurtling like a bullet through the water, the Lei-Lei Pearl can cause severe damage or even stun its attackers. Cultivating the pearls requires careful concentation on the behalf of the diver.

Some farm the clams; by encouraging their growth on submerged ropes, the colonized clams are left to drift near oceanic Leylines that ebb and flow. The farmers protect these clams from other Aquan species.

Lei-Lei Clams are also harder than normal clams of its type, making it a special component in some forms of armor and clothing. The shell can be broken down into a fine powder, which is said to have medicinal and health-positive properties for skin and nails. The edges of a broken Lei-Lei clam are sharp enough to easily slice through skin and sinew.

The meat of the clam is highly sought after. Used in fine dishes in coastal cities, it is described as having a salty and chewy consistency. Soups and spreads have been made using fresh Lei-Lei Clam meat as a base. The most sought after part of a Lei-Lei Clam is said to be its "tongue". Rich in nutrients, the tongue carries extra flavor when smoked over wood.

Unusual for a bivalve, instead of a leg, the Lei-Lei has a special tongue. This distinctive trait is similar to others within its genus, Venulas. These specialized bivalves have tongues which they can extend for filter feeding or for locomotion. The Lei-Lei Clam uses a long, flexible tongue instead. By forcing blood through the tongue, it expands and sticks to rocks or coral. Due to this distinction, the Venulas genus are characterized by bivalves with tongues.
