The Wastelands

The wastelands are said to have been a lush, thriving plain of gentle rolling land full of farms that supplied nearly everyone. That was before the cataclysm. When the monsters appeared they quickly over-ran the fields, ravaging equipment, poisoning the crops, and slaughtering the herds. That was bad, but it was made worse when the people fought back, unleashing weapons with power that is these days undreamed of. All we know is that even now the scars remain.   The bones of massive beasts and machines jut up from the nearly barren ground, the moan of winds unchecked by natural barrier creating massive dust storms that last days or even weeks and only make things worse. During the day the sun beats down creating shimmering waves of heat, while at night the temperatures quickly drop to dangerous levels.   In the centuries since, however, some life has returned. Small, hardy plants have begun to take root, the aftermath of what happened in these lands showing in the twisted and unique forms. Along the rivers is the only true shadow of the lush landscape remain, seeds from outside the wastelands washing down stream giving relief to any travelers with small trees and brush that grow along it's banks.   While there are ruins scattered about, the only the oasis city of Themiscyra stands. Travelers can find scant cause to travel the wasteland, trade convoys to or from Themiscyra, or further travel to Mekann.   The ruins are dangerous, filled with unstable, crumbling structures, and the possibilty of any step causing the ground to collapse. Still, those brave, desperate, or foolish enough can be seen heading into the dunes in search of artifacts or forgotten tech. Most commonly they are never seen again, asumed to have either been lost to the wastelands or eaten by the monsters that still roam the wastes. Very rarely, however, a band will emerge from the dust with a treasure letting them retire and inspiring a fresh wave of hopefuls to head out to their demise.
