Mages are individuals who specialize and invest in their magical ability beyond the average individual. Mage also serves as an umbrella term for people who primarily use various forms of magic to accomplish their tasks and covers many specific types such as wizards, sorcerers, curates.
A generalist mage is essentially the basic magic wielder in combat using offensive magic to fight and is usually the starting point for more specialized magic roles in the future.

Purpose
Mages are usually the ones who provide a variety of roles thanks to their use of magic. A general mage can serve as support or minor offensive/defensive role. On the offensive, a mage's primary draw is their use of magic, which allows them to attack both at long range and close up. The fact that the majority of physically-oriented combatants tend toward having lower magic resistance allows the potency of mages' magic abilities to be a more effective form of offense against them.
Demographics
While all races are capable of magic, certain ones encourage more of their kind to study more magic than others. Broadly speaking, fay races like fairies and elves, henge like jiuweihu, and spirits like jinn, dryads, and succubi are more likely to have mages. Humans tend to have even split and less so with more physical oriented races like Okurinu.

General mages are often trained to be proficient using implements to enhance and focus their magic power such as wands and scepters. Certain mages may also use tomes with spells inscribed as a reservoir of magic power as a focus as well.
Dangers & Hazards
Mages focus on magical training tends to lend them having lower defense, making them highly susceptible to being killed or severely damaged in one shot by most physical units. Also mages tend toward having significantly lower physical constitution and strength than their melée counterparts. For their protection, a standard arrangement when mages find themselves in melée-heavy combat is for them to be behind units with better defense, protecting them from most forms of melée harm and allowing them to attack approaching enemies at range.
