The 50 Year Siege

In modern times, Borne is unilaterally recognized as the seat of Triumvirism‌ (ignoring Penance's‌ penchant for ignoring that), but this was something that was earned in blood.   As The 1st Haedian Empire‌ dissolved, tensions mounted between the three great city-states of Cognance, Penance, and Sigil as to who was the true cultural epicenter of Triumvirism. This came to a head in a brief military conflict between Cognance and Penance against Sigil, as the former two believed the latter's "identical" cathedral had been purposely constructed in a more grand and opulent fashion than the others.   Sickened by the constant, petty squabbling, the Orator at the time opted to remove the Church entirely as a factor from their bickering and declared that the Church would establish its own capitol and constructed a great city around the holy site of Hengellen's Bacilica: the shrine at which Triumvirism's founder, Eero Hengellen had received his vision from the gods.   A small settlement had existed around the shrine for many years and had been something of a pilgrimage destination for Church's faithful, but now, it would rapidly grow to into a great city as the Orator's proclamation attracted tens of thousands to come and build the new House of the Triumvirate.   this did not sit well with Cognance, Penance, or Sigil. So great was their outrage that they were able to set aside decades of conflict and join forces under a common banner of seizing the new city of Borne and dragging the Throne of Arbitration back to one of their own kingdoms.   By all accounts, it should have been an easy victory.   The three combined armies boasted soldiers in the tens of thousands while Borne was able to rally a garrison of mostly volunteers to the tune of less than five thousand. And yet, not a single soldier of the combined invading forces stepped foot on the streets of Borne.   For fifty years they laid siege to the holy city, trying every trick under the sun to breach the walls, infiltrate the city, or force a surrender, but a surrender never came. Perhaps it was the city's advantageous position on a confluence of two rivers. Perhaps it was a lack of cohesion between the three armies that had spent so much time fighting each other. Perhaps it was Borne's own counter-espionage efforts that allowed for food and supplies to still move throughout the city. Or perhaps it was, as the stories today claim, divine intervention and a proclamation from the Trinity themselves that this was to be their home.   What ever reason, after fifty long years, the siege dissolved and the three states finally, albeit reluctantly, acknowledge that Borne was the rightful home of Triumvirism.
