Triton
Triton are amphibious humanoids with skin tones of varying shades of blue, green, or purple and physical traits that lend to an aquatic lifestyle: elongated and webbed fingers and toes, small fins on their calves and gills around the neck. Because they are more numerous than other amphibious peoples like sea elves and are comfortable both in water and on land, unlike their merfolk cousins, it is the Triton that most land-dwelling species are familiar with.
In the Talhani Isles, Triton are the most commonly encountered aquatic people and the most numerous of the Isles natives. Their settlements can be found along verdant coasts, nestled amongst coral reefs in the relative shallows, or along the precipice of continental shelves; many often incorporating elements both above and below water level in order to make the most of their amphibious nature.
Like many aquatic societies, Triton culture has long been shaped by the ruthlessness and hostility of their environment. While they often settle in relatively "safe" areas like reefs and coasts, ferocious predators (some animalistic, but others fully sapient, like their cousins and longstanding rivals, the Sahuagin) that stalk these areas for prey are a constant threat. For this reason, Triton culture often bring to the forefront the importance of the clan and safety in numbers. It is rare to encounter only one Triton, unless they have specifically struck out on their own to assimilate with surfacers.
Because of the hostility of their home environments, Triton society also focuses heavily on combat prowess and martial training. Most Triton go through rites of passage in order to prove they are capable with the spear and nets to ensure that they can protect themselves and their schoolmates in the event of an attack.
Spiritually, Triton are as storied and varied as any other sapient species, but many of them hold special reverence for the oceans in which they reside. If not worshipped as a deity in its own right, the Sea is often revered with religious inclinations to some degree by most Triton. In the Talhani Isles, many Triton cultures also hold space for the so-called Deep Dwellers. These are not beings to be revered, though. Indeed, legends depict the Deep Dwellers as unknowable, eldritch monstrosities that are more akin to a typhoon than some kind of deity.
