Smokewhistle Mountains

Geography

The mightiest range of mountains presides proudly over the rest of the world from its centralized location. The Smokewhistle mountains are known for their rich ore deposits as much as their dangerous lava tubes. The matriarch of this earthen family, Mount Stonekettle, is a dormant volcano. Her tunnels of churning magma emit smoke from chimneys distributed all over the range, resulting in the cluster's name.
The tallest few of the Mountains are topped with snow, but are nowhere near as white as the ice-covered mountains of Zymora to the west. North of the Mountains is the nation of Snavon, to the east is the valley of the The Haunted Realm, and to the south is a small section of sparse forest before the cliffs of Scorch Alley. The civilized portion of the Smokewhistle Mountains is mostly underground in tunnels and mines. There are two external towns, two cavern cities, and three primary entrances to the caverns. The north entrance opens to a road in southern Snavon. The west entrance opens to Aurokhor, a small snowy dwarven town in Zymora. The south entrance leads to a lightly wooded moorland called Whispermoor that is considered part of the Smokewhistle region. Whispermoor contains a single farming village named Tarvinkor.
Embedded within the mountains and nestled among the Smokewhistle Mines are two cities, Gallakor and Basaltthrone. Gallakor is the larger of the two and is a popular center of trade and business, where ore, gems, minerals, and artifacts from the mines are exchanged for food and other goods. Basaltthrone is the political capital of Smokewhistle, where the elected monarch reigns over the undermountain society.

Demographics

The vast majority of the population of the Smokewhistle Mountains consists of dwarves, and the majority of the rest are rock gnomes or races typically found in Subterranea such as drow, duergar, and svirfneblin.
Partially due to the significant dwarven population, heavy armor and weaponry are popular among warriors in the Smokewhistle Mountains. Sorcerers and other spellcasters with an affinity for fire or earth are often found within cavern-delving parties.
