The Great Shield Reef is the largest known coral reefs in Arda, and runs largely perpendicular to a long stretch of the eastern Magnosi coastline. The reef begins several miles from the estuary of the Tearflood which makes the northern border of Magnos with the neighboring nation of Romanorum. From there, it runs a fair distance up until the north-central city of Creci on continental Magnos. The reef is famous throughout the lands of the Eastern Continent for numerous reasons, but largely for the colorful and vivid wildlife of the fish, turtles, crabs, octopi, and coral of the region. The latter are often carved from the reef and sold as pieces of jewelry either polished or unpolished and polished coral is often seen as an alternative to gemstones which are pricier and more sought after by the mages of the region. The Great Shield Reef is also famous among sailors, who often curse it for its large and obtrusive fashion which makes sailing along the northern coast of Magnos far more difficult. There are a number of shipwrecks that exist along the northern edge of the reef, a testament to the threat it poses to the unwary mariner. For this same reason, the reef is also a serious deterrent to any naval invasion of Magnos near its rich and populated cities such as Creci. As it protects a great stretch of its northern coast, it is why it is called the "Great Shield Reef", as it is Magnos' "shield" against naval attacks. Likewise, the constricted region allows the Magnosi Maritime Association have better control of ships entering and leaving their ports, with some checkpoints and coast guard stations even built upon coral atolls itself.See Also
