Eastern Continent

Land of history and heroes

The Eastern Continent is the eastern half of an otherwise unnamed supercontinent in Arda. The primary division between the two being the Al-Andalus Mountain Range as it's western border to the Golden Sea making up the eastern end, and with the Ice Floes lining the northern edge of the region, and the Amaranthine Sea to the south. It is the second-largest of the three continents by landmass.

Geography

The Eastern Continent a long and fairly narrow region comprising of many different biomes as it stretches from north to south. The western most of the continent is walled by the Al-Andalus Mountain Range. As the windward side of the mountain, it is a generally more verdant area, with alpine forests towards the north to the edge of the Silvas Jankil towards the southern end, though the central area is dry, comprising of deserts and thin plains. As you go further west, the area grows in verdancy, with these dry lands giving way to plains, then to thick temperate forests, rivers and hills. The southern parts of the continent are largely composed of plains and swamps, with a larger desert further south, the Shifting Wastes. Beyond this, there is another green temperate area that makes up the cape of the continent. The northern areas vary, with the northwestern section being largely basin lands and montane forests, but much of the rest is mountains, cold tundra, and icy gorges as it reaches towards the glaciers of the Ice Floes.

History

The unnamed supercontinent that comprises the Eastern and Western Continents have been populated ever since the Heavens placed the first elves upon Arda. In their prehistory, they grew in number and began to disperse throughout the land. By the time of the First Primordial War, the first elven empire, the Romanoran Empire, had been established and was growing in power and influence. By the Second Primordial War, the Empire stretched from the Golden Sea in the east to the Dragon Sea to the west. By the Last of the Primordial Wars, and having taken much of the brunt of fighting off the Shadow Worship, the Empire was a shadow of it former self, fragmenting into many smaller nations - including Al-Andalus, Rian, and the remnants of the Romanoran Empire in the Eastern Continent.

Surviving the war, the Romanoran's brought down their remaining might in a bid to drive the Shadow from Arda. They were ultimately successful, and the Shadow's minion's fled the plane. Yet, some of the Shadow's former minions refused to follow the Shadow into extraplanar exile, and largely renounced Shadow-worship. Those who remained in Arda went farther south, founding the Enlightened Kingdom. Romanorum, with much of their power lost in endless warfare, had made several bids to reclaim their former territories, but most were unsuccessful or short-lived. Over time, settlers from Romanorum began to colonize Harad, forming an independent nation with a focus on trading and piracy. After the weathering numerous wars with the Primordial's forces, the people of Romanorum became superstitious and began persecuting spellcasters. As a result, spellcasters of many stripes fled to the southern borders of Romanorum, and led a successful rebellion against the Romanorum Empire, forming the mage's nation of Magnos. Today, the nations hold a tenuous peace, largely united against their common foe - the Shadow.
