Hagia Mendos
The heart of the Heavens
The Hagia Mendos (from Al-Andalusian Elvish: "Holy Mendos") is a cathedral to the one of the deities of the Heavens, Mendos. It is the single largest cathedral in the Eastern Continent.
After claiming Sunmetal for the Torches, Gregor and Zelt received an emergency request from the Torches to save Caliph Scheherazade. After testing the prototype Mage-Ring, they were joined by Sir Ulrich, a folk hero from Romanorum. There, they found the Hagia Mendos obscured in magical darkness. Fortunately, they were able to sneak into it via a secret Shadow Assassin tunnel into the catacombs. The Heroes soon discovered much of the church was being transported into the Transitive Plane, for unknown purposes by the fetchling Apostles of the Tyrant. Fortunately, they were able to rescue the Caliph, the other remaining survivors, and returned the cathedral to the Prime Material Plane.

History
Al-Andalus was one of many regions that was once ruled by the once-mighty Romanoran Empire in the time before the Last of the Primordial Wars. Following the events of the Last of the Primordial Wars, some of the surviving elves left Khazad-Vala to attempt to reclaim their old homes and cities from the war-torn and fractured regions of the old Romanoran Empire. For the elves from Al-Andalus region, many returned expecting that their city, Damask, would be left in ruins or worse after they fled the city from the Shadow's onslaught. To their surprise, the city was largely left intact. Claiming it was protected by divine providence by the deity Mendos, they built a magnificent cathedral in the deity's honor, and it has stood since. The cathedral itself is a large complex overlooking much of the city of Damask. It overlooks from a cliff above the city, and its grounds include gardens, graves, fountains, and gazebos in addition to the main structure. Within, there are libraries, sleeping quarters for clerical initiates, a hospital, and kitchens for the poor and transient peoples of the city. The cathedral features domes that are painted with religious frescoes and towers intended to call the faithful to prayer. The building is largely open, intended to channel the breeze in an otherwise warm region. Over time, and due in no small part to the devout peoples of Al-Andalus, the area around the Hagia Mendos has become a site of religious pilgrimage and the center of theological study of Heavens worship (the Cult of Mendos, in particular) in the Eastern Continent. Services are offered daily and nightly by Al-Andalus' highest religious authority, the Caliph. It is protected by the Order of Mendos, the militant arm of the Cult of Mendos. It is also said the enigmatic Shadow Assassins make quarters here, but these claims remain unsubstantiated.Shadows over Arda
