Holy City of Amumbra
The Shadow's promised land
The Holy City of Amumbra is a servitor plane of the Shadow. Like many of the nearby planes of the multiverse, this plane is a part of the Dragon's Domain, a set of planes believed to be under dominion of the Gilded Dragon (A.K.A. the Shadow).
The Holy City of Amumbra is the heart of the Shadow and its worship. It is said by many scholars that it is here where the Shadow resides, and directs the powerful lords and clerics of the fetchlings to enforce its will throughout the Dragon's Domain. While no one but the Shadow knows how long Amumbra as a plane has existed, the Holy City built upon it has existed for several centuries as the haven for the fleeing Shadow worshipers of Arda and would ultimately serve as the cradle and throne for their descendant fetchlings.
During the time of the Shadow's exile from Arda, Amumbra was but a small speck of floating earth in the Transitive Plane. As he channeled his followers to Amumbra, so too did he expand it and steal water and life from the other planes under his command to create a seemingly diverse but arcane landscape, like a patchwork quilt of worlds. Over time, the fled Shadow worshipers began to build upon the plane cities and temples to their god, the Shadow. As time continued to pass on the plane, the Shadow worshipers noticed they themselves had began to change from what they once were - their limbs elongated, their skin darkened, their blood blackened and the very organs in their bodies began to shift and change. To these peoples it was the sign of the Shadow's "blessing", but was simply the natural outcome of living for generations under the Shadow's corrupting influence. Thus, did the former Shadow worshipers of Arda become the fetchlings.
Today the plane of Amumbra has expanded into a vast cityscape, incorporating many of the features of the older constituent planes into its layout. It features a number of rivers, canals, and lakes which enable easy access of travel and drinking water. It is also home of mountains, forests, parks, and hills all of which make up a part of the plane. The plane does not have a sun, but the skies of the plane are endlessly gray and pale, even on a seemingly cloudless day. It is always lukewarm here, with only a slight shift towards coolness as the skies darken roughly every 12 hours, and the flora and fauna of the land have adapted accordingly.
It is important to note that the life that exists on Amumbra, while similar to those on Arda, is unlike anything seen there. Both the fetchlings and any other imported creature or plant have been changed by generations of contact with the Shadow's corrupting influence. As the realm of the Shadow, it has eyes and ears all over the plane, allowing it to easily catch most intruders or even weed out fetchlings who are weak of faith. Thus, it is a dangerous place to travel for any other than one of the Shadow's followers.
The fetchlings are the primary ancestry that live on the plane, and have built their city to suit their needs and the whims of the Shadow. The city is home to numerous cathedrals, fortresses, schools, palaces, and many more homes, workshops, and even the businesses of local fetchlings serving to the needs of extraplanar travelers. The city is protected by fetchling paladins known as the Order of the Gilded Dragon who act as the military of the plane and enforcers of the Shadow's will on the plane. Above them are the clerics of the Shadow, known as the Apostles of the Tyrant. The Tyrant is the highest-ranking fetchling cleric who is said to speak with the voice of the Shadow, and conveys the orders of the Shadow to all of the creatures in it's dominion. The Tyrant has a striking appearance, much akin to a fetchling who emerges from an extraplanar well of darkness, and is bound in heavy golden chains on their wrists, ankles, and neck.
