Ixcoloqui

A three day festival celebrating the dead when the veil to the spirit world is at its thinnest and the departed can visit the living. Preparations for the event can start weeks before the event. Altars to the dead are prepared in central public spaces of towns and villages and in people's homes. Offerings of special foods and flowers are made to honor the dead, in some cases blood sacrifices are made as well. The holiday starts when the dead and spirits of the deceased form a drumming procession with death flutes that marches out of the densest parts of the jungle, marching to the town/village altar spaces. The holiday is over when the dead march back to the jungles with their drums and death flutes.
