Matriarch of Tsedria
The Matriarch of Tsedria (Elder Tsedric: Widaayakiirʂii) refers to the monarch of Tedriya or of historical Tsedria. The first Matriarch was Ḥawʈ̂iqa.
It is a non-hereditary title, Matriarchs are elected by the Court from a select few noble families. This electoral system was developed as a compromise; there were difficulties deciding who would succeed Ḥawʈ̂iqa. Tsedric society was polyandrous, she had five husbands and multiple daughters. Her eldest daughter Aadusakta insisted that she was the rightful heir but the other daughters did not agree. A civil war nearly erupted from this dispute but the elders put a stop to this petty conflict by offering a compromise: splitting the empire into five queendoms, each governed by the eldest daughter of each husband. Thus the Tsedric Confederation was born.
The five monarchies that corroborated in the Central Court which was a sort of central government in which the five Queens would meet. Five royal families arose from this system and in order to stop further fracturing of the queendoms each Queen had to personally assign one of her husbands to be the one to give her an heir; this kept each family relatively intact. The Tsedric Confederation lasted for many centuries but with the looming threat of the newly arisen High Empire and internal strife and instability caused by certain noble families, the Central Court decided to centralise power by electing a single monarch (a Matriarch) to rule over all of Tsedria, effectively dissolving the Confederation and replacing it with an elective monarchy.
The Central Court (or just "the Court") is attended by the queen of each region and whenever the current Matriarch dies, they elect a new one.
