Shrine Maiden (Miko)
Many might believe Kaoru to be an unfortunate soul, caught up in terrible life circumstances simply by existing in Kyokai at the time that she does. Initially a shrine maiden at Terawa Sanctuary, Kaoru was caught up in the massacre that took place there in the year 1202 ATC. Though her life had been spared, she was taken as hostage by the agents of Maru and Yukichi Takuzawa, intended on being used as a sacrifice the The Abyss, hoping to create a permanent bridge between the Prime Material Plane and the demonic realm. Luckily for Kaoru however, the Hunting Party managed to release her from her captors, foiling their plans as well.
Seeking a quieter life after the trauma she had faced, though not desiring to leave her life behind as a dedicated Shrine Maiden, Kaoru would later move to the small town of Uji, located in Tsukishima Province. Though again she would be spared, in the year 1206 she would end up unintentionally a witness to the turmoil that would break out in that town during The Red Autumn, and the ensuing Kyokan Revolution in 1207 ATC.

Personal history
Born and raised in the far nothern town of Yomi, on the island of Terawa in Kyokai, Kaoru led an average middle-class childhood alongside her parents and two elder siblings. As both her mother and father worked as merchants, it was expected at a young age that she would follow suit, plying the family trade alongside her sister and brother. As fate would have it, however, her interests turned toward the divines and spirits. At the age of 13, when her family made the routine pilgrimage to Terawa Sanctuary, the young girl struck up a conversation with a miko working there at the temple, who happened to be around the same age.
As soon as she was of an age where she would be able to travel the passage between her town and the sanctuary with her parents' permission, she would return to the temple as often as she could. Her bond with the shrine maidens there would deepen into friendship, as they taught her of the Gods, Goddesses, and natural spirits that presided over their land. A yearning to follow in their footsteps overtook her, and though her parents were initially against the idea of their daughter following the path of piety, they eventually would relent, giving Kaoru leave to become an apprentice miko at the age of 16.
Education
Having grown up to a merchant family in the small town of Yomi, although she didn't have access to the best schools in the nation, her education was sufficient, and naturally had a greater focus on the spiritual side of Kyokai. This balance of academics and theology was a major driving force for her desire to become a dedicated Shrine Maiden as she grew into a young adult.
Employment
From the age of 16, Kaoru had dedicated herself to training as a Shrine Maiden, vowing herself to Terawa Sactuary and serving until its massacre in 1202 ATC. After taking some time to herself and dealing with the trauma she endured, her decision to leave the island of Terawa did little to stop her pursuit of remaining a Shrine Maiden, instead seeking employment at the local shrine in the small town of Uji.
