The Shelf
Sedden would not be the same place it is today if not for the assistance of the eels of the shelf. The elapidae state, formed under one banner, a number of eel lead counties all claim the title, the Shelf. The Shelf is home to some of the most proactive entrepreneurs of nearly any time. From the olden days where smaller tribes grew to power because of their deals with the elves who would soon form Coraar, to now where their mastery of the art of naval craftsmanship has made them the largest intersection of any walk of life in Sedden. Every nation that trades across the sea finds itself passing by the Shelf, and the Shelf is happy to entertain the company and provide nearly any service you may wish for during your stay.
There are six elapidae counties, and though each developed separately, each one has managed to blend together in the last few centuries, making them all quite similar. The elapidae are progress focused people. They're hard workers, and they've got an eye for opportunity. Their history proves that.
History
The elapidae, though slower to come into their slimy eel shoes than the sea elves, followed suit with development. Though, they did so in a different way. Instead of discovering things for themselves as other races attempted with instinctual needs for self-reliance, the elapidae quickly learned that their superior vision beneath the water and faster swimming speed allowed them to retrieve and collect things the elves could only dream of. They quickly caught up with their sea elf neighbors, though their structures were made of more traditional materials, and were often made on the shore rather than just off it, through trading with them. Resources and valuables for information and assistance. The elapidae believed that the true threats were in that which was unknown, and that is what the ocean was. The surface however, had open skies nearly half the day, which made for far safer locations during higher tides and times of year when the more predatory sea creatures would have breeding seasons.
The elapidae would, as time went on, use what they learned in their elven trade based development with other races. Making deals with the tortle, and eventually, making their way across the water. They would encounter the mice of Muria, the winged elves of Filyn, and the other human kingdoms. They were the first to explore these waters, and with their cultural nature, they would connect them. They would fulfill the primitive role of ferrymen and couriers for the other nations, slowly using their gain to build upwards. The shelf would, over time, use this growth to turn into the unified community it is today.
Demography and Population
Though the Shelf is home to nearly 90% elapidae, the rest seems to be an array of various different kinds of folks from all over, who happened to find places of work or opportunity here. The elapidae are some of the most welcoming people in Argent, as they've never been raised in a society that encouraged any sort of nationalism or discrimination. Objective ability is all that's really mattered. If you swim well, you do work in the water. If you see good, you do work in the dark. It's that simple, so long as people pull their weight or pay their toll, they're welcome.
