Halflings
A subspecies of Humans that developed after living in and near dense forests. Their smaller stature makes it easier to travel, and settlements can be packed more densely between the trees. It is believed that Halflings were one of, if not the first subspecies of Human to develop.
Halflings and normal Humans can still interbreed, proving that they are a subspecies and not a completely different species, however, the child will almost always be a (shorter than average) Human. Halfling women are generally discouraged from finding a normal Human partner, as the size difference can lead to complications during pregnancy.
People often assume Halflings are a species of Half-humans because of the name, but Halflings are named such for their "halved" stature.
