Numbthumb

A bit of a derogatory term that stuck, as it describes the job quite well. A numbthumb is a spellcaster who uses their magical abilities to cool down fresh trade goods on longer journeys, allowing them to be shipped further without spoiling.
Some nobles or other rich folk might even have a permanent numbthumb on staff to keep their stocks cold and fresh.
Numbthumbs are often apprentice wizards looking to earn while they travel. It is a very lucrative business, but frowned upon by the more senior in the arcane field.

Payment & Reimbursement

Since food and board are often included, these are deducted from the contracted pay. On merchant vessels, pay ranges from 0.5 to 2 gold per day, or 0.1 to 1 gold at ports and estates.

For merchant vessels, Halflings are preferred, since they take up less space. Even so, it is often just a temporary job.
