"Six primordial beings; they weren't just aspects of Creation, they WERE Creation. The six pillars of it. When the Creator first breathed life into the universe, they were the first thing to appear." - Arcturus
The Numina (pronounced NEW-MEH-NEIGH) are six primordial beings that some believe to be the first intelligent life brought into existence by the Creator. Present during the Spark, the very beginning of pre-recorded history, those that advocate their existence state that the Numina were driven to bring balance to a fresh reality. While originally one entity physically, the Numina were split into six separate beings by an unknown force; each representing a facet of Creation: Light, Dark, Order, Chaos, Life, and Death.
Eventually, something happened that caused the Numina to split and fracture further, their beings scattered amongst the realms, creating the Weave, the means of how mortalkind can access and utilize magic. The Numina have never truly been remade or brought whole, always trying to exert their dominance over the others. Some believe they were changed somehow, possibly corrupted. Some contend that this is what caused the Creator to eventually appoint the
Ancients as stewards over Creation.
Given their original nature, the Numina, or at least the primordial energy that comprises them, act as an immune system for the
Mortal Realm. In order to continuously exert their will on Creation given their incorporeal form, the Numina have been said to choose mortal beings to act as their Avatars. Being infused with an incredible amount of primordial energy, these individuals lose their sense of self and carry out the will of the Numina in the mortal realm, through the primordial power now channeled directly through them. Some of these entities have been named, such as the Lightbringer, Shadow-Warden, and Life-Binder.
The
Night of Golden Tears and subsequent light corruption that followed on
Solanus is said to be the result of Numina reaction, in response to the terrible darkness that befell Arkos during
The Kindling.
Many theorize the Numina desire to be whole, primordial energies attracting each other across Arkos. During the present age, most average citizens of Western Arkos are either unaware of the Numina's existence or believe it to be baseless conjecture. In more remote locations, shamans and druids are those that advocate more for the existence of these pillars of Creation, as they readily see the Numina's influence in the natural world around them.
There are also accounts where those who have been exposed to a large amount of primordial energy not only have their physical forms altered, but have been granted detailed visions of possible futures. Whether these visions are used for good or ill is up to the individual having them.
