The Purpose of Kenku

While there is no definite understanding to the exact nature of the Kenku race, one of the most popular legends regarding their creation has its origins in Ilkatu.   During the time of the Etani Kingdom, Legaku, god of monstrosities, was disgusted by the supposed "charm" and "uniqueness" of humanoids that his brother Serphala claimed. A being of action rather than words, he sought to express his revulsion through creation. using the noble Aarocockra as a model, Legaku crafted a humanoid that was avian, yet could not fly, could speak, but could not form its own words, and could think, but was deprived of creativity: the first Kenku. He believed that all humanoids, like the Kenku, were cursed with ambitions they could never achieve and were far less free-thinking than they actually thought themselves to be. Pleased with his own work, he let the Kenku grow in number, and eventually used them in the coming war between his monsters and Serphala's humanoid civilizations.   However, this war would prove to be a turning point for the Kenku, as even their limited ability to comprehend eventually came to see their creator as cruel and vindictive. Eventually Serphala would approach the Kenku and offer them a deal: switch sides and he would unlock their minds and tongues to be equal to that of their peers. The Kenku agreed, and with the combined forces of the humanoids they were able to push back the monsters and end the war.   Of course, many still question why Serphala did not also grant the Kenku the ability to fly on their own. While many religious scholar has had their own interpretation on the matter, the most common one is this: Serphala believed the ambition given to Kenkus was not a curse, but a blessing to constantly improve and strive for greater things. To give the Kenku everything they wanted would be to deprive them of the essential parts of life.   As to which brother had the correct outlook on this peculiar race, only time will tell.
