Kenway was born in Kul Tiras like his childhood friend Florence DeMeza. They grew up in the noble houses together and would often be found playing together in the courtyards. He secretly fancied her greatly. When the DeMeza family was exiled from Kul Tiras, Haytham gave up everything to follow her wherever she was whisked off to. Haytham's parents believed that he was kidnapped and lived the rest of their days believing their child ceased to exist. When the DeMeza's turned to piracy as an outlet to survive, Kenway pounced on the opportunity and learned everything he could. His pirate's life was just beginning.

The relationship he had with his family was abandoned when he followed the DeMeza's out of Kul Tiras. He has always had a secret love for the lady DeMeza which could be classified as borderline obsessive.

Lord Kenway leads the pirate faction known as the "Cutwater Corsairs". He is a close childhood friend of the current Grand Admiral DeMeza. DeMeza's "Dread Corsairs" are his allies.
