Personal history
Marcellus was born a lowly commoner in the city of Mora. Born to a half Moran-Prostitute in the slums of some back alley, he was bequeathed the humble Moran class of Quiscien. Neither a fully fledged citizen, nor an outsider to the republic. His mother at least attempted to raise him, his life was not without hardship though food was certainly scarce for him and his mother. As soon as he came of age, Marcellus would commit himself to the Moran Legions and go on his first campaign against the Vaellic tribes to the north. First he'd be drilled on what it was to be a soldier. The centurion in charge of his century was the first man he recognized as a true father figure in his life. He was a simple man, but a good man nonetheless. He was often seen as stuck-up or harsh by his legionnaires, but Marcellus saw the man for what he was, a stoic but caring man.
The two would get along great, while Marcellus was among the weakest in his Contubernium he quickly rose to the rank of Decanus and worked hard to make a living. Every Denar he'd get would immediately be sent back to his mother. So dedicated was Marcellus that he himself would quickly rise in the ranks of the Legion. While the Morans failed to take much land in his first campaign, Marcellus would become a man worth noting in the Legion. He stood out among the rest of his Century, and was promoted to first Decanus to the Centurion he served who became the First Centurion of the eleventh Legion.
Once back in Mora he was able to buy him and his mother new homes. His mother was able to retire, and Marcellus would get married while the campaigning season was over. Marcellus would be offered a new job, he would be granted the official title of Centurion and start training new recruits regularly throughout the next several years. Once the next Campaign season hit, however, Marcellus was sent on the longest campaign of his life. No longer a young man, Marcellus was tasked with leading his own Century north into a 15 year long campaign against the Vaellic tribes to the north. The war was long and hard fought, the Vaellic people fought to the best of their ability, though Marcellus' superiors refused to give in to the attrition of war. They kept pushing and pushing until they had successfully carved out a large swathe of land from the Vaellic people, assimilating two more tribes into the Moran Republic.
Marcellus' men had been tasked with a great many things, in the war he had even lost the man he once viewed as his father. Upon returning to Mora, he was hailed as a war hero. The great Maghnisii family of Mora had recognized him officially and had welcomed him into their house as Marcellus Magnisius Fortis for his valiance in the war. Marcellus, now aged 42, retired from the Legion a wealthy man. He was also granted full citizenship in Mora and recognized officially as a Quiritii as well as his family back home. As he returned home however, his good news streak had ended. His wife had presumed him dead a long time ago and had been seeing another man in his absence. He had hardly gotten to know his daughter before departing and never realized he had a son. The new man was afforded the pleasure of calling himself the father of his children and this unleashed a wrath Marcellus had never experienced in his life. The man was slain by Marcellus hand and came to be his deepest regret. His wife and son never forgave him, and his daughter distanced herself for some time. Marcellus, to atone for the murder he had committed, bought his wife and children their own nicer home and took residence in the cheap apartment-like building they used to call home. No longer seeing a use in being at home, Marcellus returned to the only thing he knew. He begged his old superiors for his job back, and was once again enlisted in the Moran Legion as a Centurion in the eleventh legion under Calvus of the Neranii family. He would stay there training men for the coming years until he met the misfits that would become Contubernium 7.
Before departing for the great Vaellic War to the north, Calvus promoted Marcellus to Legate of the eleventh Legion and through clever manipulation, got him voted into becoming the Plebian Tribune in the Senate. He now leads the famous Eleventh Legion in the greatest war in Moran history against the Vaels to the north.
