Melora

The Wildmother

Melora is the goddess of nature, wilderness and the sea in the Astorian Pantheon. She is often worshipped by elves as well as hunters and rangers. She is the antithesis of Erathis, the deity of civilization, and is also known to dislike Asmodeus. She has no astral domain and prefers to simply wander the cosmos. Sailors often make offerings to her before they embark on their voyages.

Although Melora often opposes her sister Erathis, she does not oppose the proper and respectful use of nature's bounty. She understands that people must hunt, grow food, and fashion clothing and shelter. She is not interested with merely preserving the wilderness untouched and unspoiled. Rather, Melora seeks to maintain wilderness as a home to as many plants, animals, and creatures as possible. If some creatures must die to support the others, so be it. If, however, some of the inhabitants despoil or taint the land, Melora grows angry. Those who misuse or abuse the wilds are most apt to draw her ire, and are likely to incur a visit from several vengeful Melora clerics or followers.

When the Wildmother chooses to appear before her followers in visible form, she is most often seen as a human, elven, or half-elven female of strong but lithe build and piercing green eyes. She usually wears the garb of a woodsman or hunter and is surrounded by a mane of golden-red hair and tangles of leaves and vines that stretch out around her. She is fierce of spirit, but kindly of disposition, a loving mother who is just as likely to be kind as she is firm when guiding the races of Astoria, whom she views as her children.

Tenets of Faith

Melora commands her followers thusly:
  • Protect the wild places of the world from destruction and overuse. Oppose the rampant spread of cities and empires.
  • Hunt aberrant monsters and other abominations of nature.
  • Do not fear or condemn the savagery of the wild. Live in harmony with the wild.

Holidays

Wild's Grandeur 20th of Asdeliar: The peak of the Spring season is the holy day of the Wildmother, where worshipers journey to places of great natural beauty and take time to observe and reflect. In cities across Astoria, trees are often planted in observance of Wild's Grandeur.
