Elf

"Beautiful and elegant. That's how the Elves had been described to me, and, in fact, that was true for all the Elves I had met in my younger years. But during the course of my pilgrimage, I have met so many different Elves in every corner of the realm that, at this point, I'm not sure there is a single phrase that can describe them as a whole."
— Nathaniel Windvale, A Pilgrimage Across the World
Elves are a diverse, enigmatic and long-lived race hailing from the Feywild. Suffused with a powerful latent magic, they rapidly adapt to their local environments over only a few generations, and as such, can be found in every corner of the world, with unique attributes suited to their surroundings. Such stark differences have led to divides among the different castes, with most clans living independant of one-another.

Appearance

Elves are commonly tall, slender humanoids, possessed of an otherworldly grave and fine features that give them a hauntingly beautiful appearance. Their pointed ears are unique among other races, and a constant across all subraces. Skin tones, eye and hair colour vary between subraces, with many of them having distinct and unique appearances that set them apart from other Elves.

Fey-Born Nomads

All Elves can trace their lineage to the Feywild. According to myth, when The Traveller left the Feywild and arrived in Asylum, he brought with him his children, who would go on to become the ancestors of all modern Elves. They believe that The Traveler made it the divine duty of the Elves to travel all over Asylum and learn whatever they can, and offer it up to the great collective consciousness of Galonadel. Many modern Elves still hold true to these values, finding purpose in roaming Asylum as knowledge-seeking nomads. However, there are those who reject this idea, and have abandoned the teachings of The Traveler altogether, often settling in cities or finding work where their unique talents can be of service.

The Reverie and Galanodel

Unlike most races, Elves do not need to sleep. Rather, they enter a meditative, trance-like state called a Reverie. During their Reverie, an Elf performs a series of mental exercises that rejuvinates their body and mind. Additionally, while in the Reverie, an Elf is able to set their mind adrift to eventually arrive in Galanodel. Galanodel - which means "Moon Whisper" in Elvish, is believed to be the divine realm of The Traveller and, according to myth, contains the cumulative knowledge and shared memories of all Elves past and present. Here, an Elf can offer up the skills and abilities they have learned in exchange for another from the libraries of the Elves' shared knowledge.

Subraces

Most subraces of Elves are particular adaptations taken on to thrive in a particular environment, with most Elven preferring to exclusively roam their favoured environments. There are eight known Elf subraces:   Blood Elves, twisted and cursed by their dark history.
Dark Elves, otherwise known as Drow, who inhabit the shadowy depths of the Underdark.
Desert Elves, fierce hunters who roam the harsh deserts.
Eladrin, modern natives of the Feywild, brought to the mortal realm by mysterious means.
Sea Elves, aquatic pacifists who roam the oceans.
Snow Elves, powerful warriors of the frozen wastes.
Warped Elves, transformed by the influence of Warp into an otherworldly new form.
Wood Elves, the most common of the Elves, dwelling in forests, planes and prairies.

Elf Traits

Elves in Asylum use the traits presented on page 38 of the Player's Handbook, with the following changes:   Greater Trance. You don't need to sleep, and magic can't put you to sleep. You can finish a long rest in 4 hours if you spend those hours in a trancelike meditation, during which you retain consciousness.
Whenever you finish this trance, you can gain two proficiencies that you don't have, each one with a weapon or a tool of your choice selected from the Player's Handbook. You mystically acquire these proficiencies by drawing them from shared elven memory, and you retain them until you finish your next long rest. This trait replaces the Trance trait.
