Mining

If it can't be found laying about, dig it up!
— a dwarven miner
This is the basic premise behind mining, and it is believed by most races that dwarven can be credited by doing it first, as many creation myths proclaim that they dug up from beneath the world to its surface. Mining is usually one of the earliest technologies and occupations for a civilization. The Wegwiur mined flint in the Frigid Wastes c.-2950 of the Ancient Era. The ancient drow mined malachite and obsidian c.-4000 of the Merethic Era using the hard stones as decoration and currency. These early mines were generally open-pit mines, or shallow shaft mines (less than 150-200 feet deep).   It was Admerian engineers who would develop efficient mining strategies; among, their other magical advances, constructing water gems to transport large amounts of water to mines where the water was used to remove debris and separate ore from crushed rock, a sort of early hydraulic mining. Carcinian engineers around this time would develop the process of thermal cracking to shatter rockfaces in the sand. Building large fires against the rock face and heating the stone until it shattered when a stream of steaming, bubbling water was pouring directly onto it. The mining methods of these two great civilizations have spread around the world, as men dug for copper, iron, silver, electrum, gold, adamantine, mithral, gems, and just about every other mineral and crystal.
