Arcanium
The Arcanium, located in the center of Hadrianus , was the empire's premiere institution dedicated to the study and application of arcane magic. Children from across the empire who demonstrated an affinity for magic were eligible to apply, regardless of race or status. This made the Arcanium a far more tolerant institution than most others in the empire; raw talent counted more than anything else. Because of this attitude the majority of the Arch Magi, the highest position in the Arcanium, have been elves.
The Arcanium was built atop the ruins of Elvantor's palace complex, and it is said that the sub-levels of the Arcanium still connect directly to the fey realm. It is also rumored that the campus was haunted by the ghosts of the Eladrin who perished in the fighting, although to date no credible reports of actual hauntings (or possessions) have surfaced.
When accepted into the Arcanium, the child was separated from their family and spent the rest of their childhood dedicated to studying magic. Once a student had obtained proficiency in their school of magic and reached their 18th birthday, they were free apply what they have learned in the larger world or stay at the Arcanium to further magical research. Evokers and Diviners were often recruited into the military, while disciples of other schools find their services in high demand in other professions.
Any magic users not trained at the Arcanium are viewed with suspicion and sometimes outright hostility by the empire. Necoromancy, in particular, is highly regulated and can only be practiced with permission from the Arch Magus and the Church of Krom. This makes the practice of necromancy extremely lucrative, even if it makes the mage a social pariah.
In addition to training the empire's mages, the Arcanium also contained a reliquary with some of the most powerful magical artifacts from across the empire. Legally, the Hadrianic emperor owns these artifacts, and the Arch Magus controls access. This was one of the few concessions the first emperor, Hadrian, was willing to make to win the support of the Arch Magus.
The Church of Krom, wary of the potentially apocalyptic power housed in the Acranium's reliquary, as well as the sway the Arch Magus holds over the emperor, has been stepping up its investigations into alleged heresy of the Arch Magus and other high-ranking members of the Arcanium.
Recently, the Arch Magus, as well as several powerful artifacts from the reliquary, have disappeared. Grand Inquisitor Dralin was called to investigate alleged heresy related to this disappearance, and put the party on trial for their ties to the Grand Inquisitor's disappearance. The tribunal found them not guilty of heresy.
In the chaos following the not guilty verdict, the main building of the Arcanium was burnt to the ground. Who started the fire, and what was lost in the destruction, is still unknown.
