Cael the Shaman (Cay-El)
Archdruid Cael (a.k.a. The Shaman)
Cael is the Archdruid of Syllin's Grove in the western provinces of the Hadrianic Empire. He is at least 450 yeas old, and is one of the few remaining wood elves who remembers what life was like before Hadrianic Empire conquered the Avec wood elves and enslaved their people. Although most free wood elves have joined Hadrianic society, Cael still agitates for the end of slavery throughout the empire. Because of this, Syllin's Grove has developed a reputation as a safe haven for runaway slaves of all races. Although watched closely by The Black Brigade , the emperor's network of spies and assassins, the emperor has yet to take any overt action against Cael for fear of sparking rebellion in the west.
Cael is a tall and slender wood elf with dark copper skin and pointed ears. His long hair is mostly grey with hints of its former brown hue still showing through. His eyes are dark and his face looks weathered from years of resisting the empire. When not prowling the forest as a bird of prey, Cael dons the hide of an owlbear and has multiple feathers, fangs, teeth, and other adornments on his armor.
Cael is well respected by the elven nobility in Avec, the province that houses his grove. Cael prefers to speak in Elvish, where he can add notes and inflection to provide deeper meaning to his words. When speaking in Common, he speaks slowly and clearly.
As he is getting on in years, Cael's power diminishes the further he wanders from Syllin's Grove. He knows that soon he will be joining his fellow elves in returning to the earth, and reuniting in the next world with the heroes from his youth.
The party helped defend Syllin's Grove from a party of hobgoblin slavers. At the request of Cael, they followed the slavers to their hideout and liberated a number of elven slaves from their captors. This included The Child (@the child), and four year old tiefling with incredible magical abilities.
Cael encouraged Elomira to denounce the emperor during the party's trial for heresy. Elmoira followed his suggestion, which helped contribute to the civil strife erupting in the capital city, Hadrianus.
Mental characteristics
Failures & Embarrassments
Realizes that direct confrontation with the empire will only lead to ruin. The free elves in Avec are generally comfortable and prosperous under the empire’s rule, and don’t seem to care for the plight of their enslaved brethren in the capital.
Morality & Philosophy
Staunchly opposes the empire and has little sympathy for her allies. He holds special contempt for the wood elf nobility who cooperate with the emperor, even if he needs their cooperation.
Is opposed to slavery of all races, not just his fellow wood elves.
Social
Family Ties
To his knowledge, Cael is the only surviving child of Syllin, hero to the Avec wood elves for leading the ultimately doomed resistance against the legions of the Hadrianic empire.
