Subjugation of the Avec Wood Elves

As told by Cael the Shaman:
"The wood elves of Avec were a peaceful people content with living simple lives, revering nature, and trading with their many neighbors. The treacherous Hadrianum invaded the Western part of Avec territory and claimed it for themselves by right of expansion, as the city could no longer support its great number of inhabitants. Incursions into sacred hunting grounds and further expansions into the plains forced the Avec to take up arms and defend their homes from the continuous threat of the red legions.
Syllin the Defender united the tribes and villages under her banner and fought back against the red legions. For several years she found success – the elves slaughtered the invading legions and pushed the empire back to its borders. It looked as if victory was assured until the Hadrianum sent Claudius the Unbreakable to rally the legions and strike back against the wood elves.
Claudius waged war not just on the people, but on the land. He burned our villages, enslaved our people, poisoned our rivers, salted our farmland, and destroyed our forests. He deprived our people of their very essence, our connection to the land. It was a catastrophe.
After two years Claudius had captured or destroyed almost all of our territory. Syllin, and three thousand of her most loyal soldiers, fought Claudius and his legions down to the last elf, making a heroic last stand rather than face slavery and humiliation. It is said that the last elvish army fought so heroically, Claudius and his officers erected an honorary funeral pyre for the fallen elves and gave them full military honors.
The ashes of those elves who perished 400 years ago became part of the soil. And from those ashes a sacred grove was born, a tribute to the sacrifice of Syllin and her people."
