End of the Age of Balance

Written by orphidor

The Age of Balance is theorized to end similarly as to how it began. Many believe that it will be a quiet event with little fanfare, many hundreds or even thousands of years in the future.

Summary

In the years before the Age of Balance comes to a close, chaos will steadily begin to dominate once again. The laws of reality will fluctuate, subtly at first, until the Realms of Athanya gravitate out of alignment and swing into a lopsided new arrangement. This much is known thanks to the words of the Deities. What else is to take place is up to individual speculation.   Many have come to the conclusion that the intelligent races will lose their gift of self-awareness at the moment the Realms fall out of alignment, similar to how they gained it as the planes moved into their current arrangement. It's commonly thought that the Deities will cease to exist and the dead behemoths may make a return. No matter what happens within the Realms, however, it's assumed by most that the planes themselves will remain intact for untold milennia, rotating around each other at an imperceptible pace, constantly forming new shapes in relation to one another.   Though the exact time when the current era will end is unknown, it's assumed to lie at least several hundred years in the future due to the incredibly slow speed at which the Realms move.

Historical Basis

Records from those alive at the time the Age of Balance provide insight into how the era began while simultaneously providing hints as to how it may end. Certain Deities have loose knowledge regarding the era's conclusion, which they have shared as part of the Divine Conveyance.

Spread

What little is contained regarding the end of the Age of Balance is found within the Divine Conveyance. This information has provided the basis for each commonly-accepted speculation. Interestingly enough, most major groups who regularly think about such things came to similar conclusions about the exact nature in which the Age of Balance will end, though this is only logical given that most were speculating with the same information in mind.

Variations & Mutation

Some have come up with more colorful ideas involving anything from exploding suns to giant snakes, but these theories are usually dismissed as being "unrealistic" compared to the natural assumptions that are commonly made given the information already present regarding the era's beginning.

Cultural Reception

The average person pays little mind to the idea, but those with more anxious dispositions may find themselves looking about for signs that the Age of Balance is coming to a close ahead of schedule. (Their fears have little basis to them.) A few individuals throughout the centuries have attempted to create monuments that will stand the test of time and survive the era's end, but this type of endeavor is inaccessible for ordinary people.
