Grovedwellers' Tongue

Written by orphidor

Though they technically speak the same language as the rest of the Middle Realm, the Grovedwellers' accents and variations in vocabulary make them nigh-incomprehensible to outside communities.   Many phrases commonly used in this dialect are tied to the flesh trees the Grovedwellers hold in such high regard. Most conversations bear the influence of the trees and their mutterings, even those featuring entirely unrelated subject matters, demonstrating the Grovedwellers' fascination with their environment and reverence for the magic that flows through the area. Most of these phrases indicate the presence of respect or surprise.   The accent that has developed in the area over time is highly unique. Described as "harsh" by outsiders, the dialect features clipped vowels, emphasized consonants, and an unusually near-gutteral R sound emanating from the back of the throat. On the rare occasions when the Grovedwellers have had conversations with outsiders, understandability was an issue between the parties, but they were still able to get their main points across.   In terms of vocabulary, this dialect possesses numerous different words for the various elements of nature (particularly the anatomy and habits of the flesh trees.) An extensive dictionary of magic-related terms is present as well, including many descriptive terms for and fine distinctions between spells.
