Sea Monster
Sea monsters are just one type of mysterious beast among many to wander Middle and Higher Realms. Due to their tendency to spend their lives in the vast open ocean and avoid drawing close to shore, few self-aware creatures besides the occasional sailor have witnessed the sheer spectacle of their size.
Basic Information
Anatomy
They always seem to have numerous sharp teeth and long, snakelike necks, bodies, and tails. Their number of appendages may vary, but they're always symmetrical. Their limbs may have webbed digits or might be flippers.
Genetics and Reproduction
Females of this species typically lay clutches of eggs at periodic intervals during their wanderings. These eggs (which tend to be enormous and have semi-flexible shells) can remain where they're laid in the chill of the deep sea for years until a male happens across them.
Growth Rate & Stages
These strange creatures continue to grow the longer they live, though the rate at which they grow slows dramatically once they reach maturity at the age of a few decades.
Ecology and Habitats
These creatures thrive in the vastness of the opean ocean. They hardly ever venture anywhere near land.
Dietary Needs and Habits
They will eat any creature they can kill (which encompasses large fish, sharks, dolphins, seals, and small whales.) The larger their last meal, the longer they can wait before eating again. Most dive below their intended prey and race upward to snatch them in their jaws, though a few of the faster ones settle with chasing their targets down in a more conventional way.
Behaviour
Despite their fearsome appearance, they're surprisingly gentle, except when they're hungry. Some are curious and enjoy investigating unfamiliar objects in their surroundings (such as passing ships.) They don't have a tendency to attack ships unprovoked.
Additional Information
Average Intelligence
They aren't particularly self-aware and are not considered to be an intelligent race. They are, however, capable of learning and show curious traits.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Their senses of hearing and smell are fantastic. Their sight is usually decent and they typically aren't hindered by low-light conditions. Some use echolocation to maneuver their surroundings.
Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms
Certain small fish have been known to follow them around wherever they go and clean parasites off their scales or eat small particles left over after their hunts. These fish are too small for the sea monsters to care about or even notice.
Lifespan
175 to 200 years
Average Length
75 to 100 feet
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Most are gray, green, or black. Some have bright red or green accents.
