Sky Monster Death Storms

Written by orphidor

When sky monsters die, their bodies dissolve into roiling storms, drenching everything beneath them with heavy rain. The events are known to last for several days at a time and are actually rather beautiful due to the rainbows they create at their beginnings and ends.

Manifestation

The storms don't tend to be windy, just extremely rainy. They're accompanied by intense levels of thunder and lightning. They tend to start off with a light drizzle, but they quickly transform into a relentless downpour. The storm lightens as time goes on and eventually fades out of existence.   The mere presence of a sky monster is not enough to demonstrate that one of their death storms is about to occur since they make their way through the area on a regular basis. The creature's behavior is typically what shows those on the ground that they need to prepare for a storm. The sky monster always appears sluggish and doesn't writhe with vigor or bellow loudly like healthy members of its species. Just minutes after it stops moving and begins to drift limply, its body starts melting apart, beginning at the extremities, gradually turning into clouds of pure water vapor. Nothing is left of the creature once it completely dissolves and the remaining clouds scatter.

Localization

Due to the fact that sky monsters become weaker as they grow close to death and this allows strong wind currents to carry them, they often wind up dissolving along the Stormswirl Coast. Though it does happen, it's rare to see a sky monster's death storm in other locations. The locals of the Stormswirl Coast are used to their presence and know what to do when they arrive (along with the other storms that frequent the area.)
