History of Auros

First Light

0 3000

First Light, also known as the Age of Creation, is when Auros first began. It was during this time that the Four Winds were born, the lands were formed, and so were all the creatures that inhabited Auros in the ages to come.

    The Creation of Auros
    Celestial / Cosmic

It was the end of the last lifetime of the Universe, and the beginning of the lifetime of this one. Here, at this point in time and space, were only the Dusk and the Dawn, born from the remnants of the reality that had just ended in order to usher in life anew.   Dawn brought light, and from her light, she birthed an egg. This egg is the world that we call Auros, which means child of Dawn. Dusk, her companion and protector, used his great cloak of darkness to envelope the light, and direct the warmth to where it needed to be in order to shape Auros as it grew.   Auros spun in their arms, some times glowing with light, other times clothed in darkness. Together, the Dawn and Dusk tended to the world for 100 years, until it was time to create life within Auros.

Creation of the Dawnlands, the Land of Dusk, and the Four Corners of the World
    Celestial / Cosmic

After 100 years of tending to the world, Dawn and Dusk breathed life into Auros, from whence came the Four Winds: the North Wind, cold and strong, the South Wind, hot and dry, the East Wind, biting and bitter, and the West Wind, warm and gentle.   Dawn and Dusk continued to hold Auros in their arms, still spinning it slowly and covering it in light and darkness in turns. Over the ages, the great egg filled with oceans, and from these oceans rose mountains and hills.   The North Wind blew icy cold over his territory, turning mountains into glaciers, while the South Wind covered his realm in burning air, which blasted the hills into dunes of sand. The East Wind swept up ocean waters into the air and brought rain down over the lands, while the West Wind danced in the valleys, guiding waters into rivers, streams, and lakes. For a time all was well, but it was not long before the winds began to argue.   With no other companions and nothing else to do, they waged war upon each other. The North Wind blasted shards of ice, the East Wind tried to drown his brothers, and the South Wind suffocated them with his heat. The West Wind tried to appease his brothers' tempers, but when he failed (as often he did), he played messenger among them.   One day, during an especially violent time, one of the brothers threw a strike at another, but instead of hitting one of the winds, it hit the borders of the world, cracking the shell of the great egg. The nothingness that surrounded the Egg and Dawn and Dusk began to seep in through the cracks. To protect the world, the Four Winds banded together and built great mountains to cover the cracks by blasting sand with heat, or blowing freezing wind over mud and rain.   The Dawn lay her body around the largest crack in the East, while the Dusk lay his body by the West, both curving their arms and legs to ensure that cracks to the North and South were well tended, too. The spinning of the world slowed considerably, so much that the time of light and the time of darkness were much longer.   Despite all their efforts, there were tiny cracks in the egg's shell that could still not be covered. Through these places, the nothingness came through, bringing despair, illness, destruction, and war with it. Every place they drew near got sucked into the void, making it bigger as it moved. When Dawn and Dusk learned of this, they created sentinels, Mex and Roa, to carry beacons of light--the sun and the moon across the sky and guard against the void.

Creation of the Flora and Fauna of Auros
    Celestial / Cosmic

Once the Sentinels were created, Dawn and Dusk knew it was time for them to fill the world with vegetation and creatures.   First, they raised the plants and trees from the ground. Mex shone his warm light over the land while the East Wind brought rain down over it. In only 10 years, the world was covered with all sorts of plant life.   After this, they created the Nymphs. Dawn and Dusk each sang a sweet note, and as soon as the harmony formed, one of the winds carried it to where each nymph's dominion. One was brought to the top of a mountain, where it rang over all the stones. All the stones quivered, and the largest boulder broke in two. From this broken boulder emerged the first of the Mountain Nymphs. Another harmony was brought to middle of the sea, where it sank beneath the waves. Even under the water it rang, causing the waves to swell until they were one gigantic wave as tall as a mountain. This wave crashed upon the shore and once it receded into the sea, the Sea Nymphs were found standing in the shallows. The next harmony was brought into the heart of the largest forest, where it wove in and out of the trees, causing their branches to sway and leaves to fall and swirl about until there was a cyclone of leaves. Once it died down, there stood the Forest Nymphs, among them the greatest of all Nymphs, who would later be known as the Queen of the Fae.   Next, they created the winged beasts and the birds. Chief among them was the King of Gulls.   Then they created fishes and creatures of the seas and rivers, all of whom were ruled by a giant octopus known as Lord of the Deeps.   Once the skies and the seas were filled with creatures, the Dawn and Dusk instructed the winds, the sentinels, and the nymphs, to dream of the creatures that would cover the lands. The nymphs dreamed of the animals--all sorts, small and great, predators and prey. The winds dreamed of the dwarves, that hardy race of warriors and craftsmen from the mountains. And the sentinels dreamed of men, who w

Age of Awakening

    Regime of the Mothers
    Cultural event

In the early days of the world, the inhabitants of Auros were largely matriarchal, particularly those in the race of men. Many humans in Grenn and Vintaq worshipped Dawn as their supreme goddess, and while Dusk was also one of the main gods, people generally considered Dawn the mother of all life. Tribes and clans had priestesses, majority of the leaders of different communities were women, and women were highly revered in general society.    Some communities believed that the world was cradled in the womb of a goddess, only known as Mother, who was a giver of life. This belief later died out as a result of wars and the shift into a more patriarchal society.

Invention of the Great Axes and Saws
    Scientific achievement

Great axes and great saws allowed people to cut larger trees than they had previously been able to. This brought about a new style of shelter (up until this point people lived in lightweight wooden abodes made with branches and the trunks of young trees). Once great axes and great saws were created by Crafty Uggo (a dwarf and particularly gifted craftsman), the peoples of Auros were able to build sturdier homes, larger wagons and carts, and eventually, ships.

    The First Wars of Men
    Military: War

Most communities of men, which were very primitive at the time, had managed to co-exist peacefully since the awakening. As populations were smaller and travel was limited beyond one group's own territory before the invention of various transportation vessels (wagons, carts, ships) and established roads were few and far between, conflicts between communities were rare. Up until this time, most communities were also self-sufficient, and trade was not common. However, once communities grew larger and traveling further had become easier, differences in language, culture, and clans became more apparent. During this period, the first wars of men began, and many communities began to depend more and more on warriors and defenders, most of whom were male. By the end of this period, wars had become so common that male clan leaders, generals, and chieftains were appointed instead of women, as the focus of many groups were to defend their own.

    The Great Quake
    Disaster / Destruction

No one knows what caused the Great Quake, but stories passed down through generations of peoples across Auros state that one day, the sky was unusually clear and the seas strangely calm. Birds ceased their song, and animals hid in their habitats, unseen by men. Then the sky turned red and the ground shook. In some places, the earth cracked and gave way, making deep chasms. Boulders rolled down the mountains that bordered the Dawnlands and fell into the lands below. Many villages were destroyed--some crushed by boulders, others swallowed into the chasms. One of the most notable areas of destruction was The Golden Beach.

    Blight on the Emerald Valleys
    Geological / environmental event

Before it was called The Raven Plains, the Emerald Valleys were a highly contested territory. Two kings claimed the Emerald Valleys as part of their domain--one king had his seat in a palace at the edge of where Saltwood now is, while the other had a castle atop the hill which was known at the time as Titania's Ladder. Both kings had a battalion of Morrigan each, but when the time came to fight, the Morrigan, weary of rendering service to weak and greedy men, formed a great spiraling circle and called fire down from the sky. They drove the winds around the battlefield, toppling the hills and sending stone and earth down into the valleys. The blaze seemed to travel all the way across what was once the Emerald Valleys, and the flames crept up to the castle at Titania's Ladder and the palace at the edge of Saltwood, turning both great houses to ash. The burning lasted 9 days, and finally, Titania I rode out on her unicorn mare and watered the fields with her own blood, ending her life on Auros. As she died, the sky grew dark, and a slow rain came down and put out the flames. Once the fires were all out, no one was left, not even the Morrigan, who had smote their ruin upon the land. Flocks of carrion descended over the battlefield and feasted for many days. But even after the last of them flew off, the earth remained black, and nothing grew there for years. When finally life returned to what had become known as The Raven Plains, all the plants that grew were black or ash gray. To this day, many people of Grenn refuse to eat anything grown in the black fields.
