Loa-Kana, the Watcher Below

Loa-Kana, also known as "the Watcher Below", is the god of knowledge and secrets, master of of deep ocean, and the creator of Aberrations.   An ancient, mysterious being, even by the standards of deities, Loa-Kana is a being that many feel doesn't live up to the auspiciousness of the title. Said to reside in the deepest parts of the ocean, Loa-Kana is a god of knowledge, providing those who wish to learn with the answers they seek. His price for this boon is to learn himself, either old secrets known only to you, or new secrets revealed in your worship, "knowledge in exchange for knowledge". While this may seem to be a benevolent deal, it is said that Loa-Kana is an inherently untrustworthy being. He is said to be perpetually scheming and notoriously mischievous, setting supplicants down dangerous paths towards mortal peril, harmful lore, and ultimately to irreversible madness.   Despite this, Loa-Kana maintains a healthy number of followers. He is a patron of learned folk, holding many followers among the likes of academics, scholars, record keepers, and mages. Those who have turned to worshiping Loa-Kana to obtain knowledge will often have sought out the Watcher's patronage in exchange for learning vital information to suit their needs. Loa-Kana is notably forthcoming with this information, trading knowledge learned for knowledge in kind. This relationship, while more often than not benign, can often lead into obsession, and even insanity. Further desperate pursuits into uncovering dark secrets to offer up to the Watcher can lead to practitioners delving into forbidden troves of learning, occultist activities, and consorting with dangerous beings to further their intellect.   This connection between follower and patron, when taken to it's ultimate conclusion, often leads to disastrous results. Should a follower of Loa-Kana take on too much of his divinely ordained power, their bodies will begin to change, mutate, and evolve into aberrant creatures. This has lead many who do not practice the faith of the Watcher to look upon his followers with distrust and disdain, for any who delve too deep in his forbidden lore may begin to lose their minds, bodies, and souls to the Watcher, and become horrendous aberrant beings.   Loa-Kana neither dissuades nor encourages this behavior, as the exchange of knowledge is entirely transactional in his mind. He holds no particular fondness for any of his raving mutant spawn, be they Krakkens, Illithids, Aboleths, or any other form of aberrant life. He does, however, hold mortal beings in very high regard, finding them quite charming and deeply entertaining. It is believed among those with psionic powers that it was Loa-Kana who granted them the gift of their powerful minds, out of fondness for mortal beings and their untapped potential.   Loa-Kana is also worshiped among sea-travelers, especially those living along the western and southern coasts of Auvia. Offerings to Loa-Kana are made by traders & fishermen before a long voyage, and sailors will often adorn themselves with intricate tattoos depicting forgotten languages and writhing tentacles to honor the Watcher, as to grant them the wit and cunning needed to survive on the high seas.   Among the polytheistic religions of Auvia, Loa-Kana is a primary deity within the Lore of the Deep (where he is known as "The Great Krakken"), and is considered evil by both the Great Wheel of Aethra and the Sons of the Titan.
