Fjall Dýr, Mountain of the Beast

Fjall Dýr is a pacifist settlement built upon three mountains along the Wintercrest Peaks. The city is the beautiful heart of the harsh Wintercrest landscape, taking advantage of large valleys with fertile land and rich gemstone deposits, providing food and beauty in return for prosperity across Edea. Fjall Dýr is made up of three coexisting clans of Arctic, Hill and Mountain dwarves. The clans live separately atop, within and before the mountains, contributing unique roles to the Dýrian infrastructure, society and way of life. The Arctic Dwarves live atop the mountain in their villages, frosty greenhouses and sprawling paddocks. The Mountain Dwarves live within the mountain, in their stone halls and gemstone mines, forging gemstones and feats of metalwork. The Hill Dwarves, who live before the mountain in their spruce barns and miles of farmland, produce hardy crops and healthy animals in large open range fields.

Government

Fjall Dýr is governed by a Council of Elders, a ruling body proportionally representing the clans:
  • Three Arctic Dwarves, the guardians of the Shepard circle
  • Two Mountain Dwarves, the twin heirs of the founder, and the rightful rulers of, Fjall Dýr
  • Five Hill Dwarves, elected representatives voted in by the farmers and merchants before the mountain.
These elders meet bi-monthly, or unless an emergency presents itself. The isolated nature of the community means there is rarely a major change produced through a council meeting, and most time is spent solving disputes between civilians of the mountain.

Industry

The three tribes have crafted unique settlements and ways of living over the centuries of cohabitation. Before the mountain, aqueducts and irrigation systems are found alongside large, Nordic barns and houses. Within the mountain, wide halls and tall catacombs are lined with unique and personalised nooks, home to the mountain dwarves. Atop the mountains, greenhouses and sprawling paddocks sit alongside tall pagodas and cherry huts which house the arctic dwarves, as well as warehouses where the goods produced across the city are processed and crafted into goods to distribute and sell.   The majority of Dýrian industry is built around agriculture. Elegant aqueducts and irrigation systems feed miles of grains and roots, mountaintop paddocks breed hearty herbivores such as Yak and Moose, and beautiful greenhouses warm berries and beans.
Within the mountain, artistically carved mines scout out gemstones, particularly, amber, lapis lazuli and emerald which is hauled above ground to be carved and set in unique and renowned jewellery and trinkets by Arctic dwarf craftsmen and artisans.
The goods produced by the three tribes are almost all shipped to the arctic dwarves, kept to be processed and crafted into magnificent goods to be distributed to the rest of the city. Between the Dýrians, bartering and trading is symbolic, with most basic needs met, residents trade luxuries and favours, as well as invites to feasts and gatherings in return for services.
Beyond the boundaries of Fjall Dýr, excess goods, livestock and culturally renowned goods are sold to other dwarvern settlements and beyond, wealthy merchants often ordering large quantities of Dýrian produce for hefty prices.   Fjall Dýr is stocked highly with equipment of mining and farming, along with expensive crafting tools used by the arctic dwarves. They keep stores of durable food, keeping citizens fed all through the long winters of north Edea.

Religion

The mountain has no organised religion, and most deity worship in the community is private and individual. Many residents of the settlement do pay heed to and respect the circle of the Shepherd, however, and the many healers and clerics of the circle who worship Gwaeron Windstrom are venerated in the community. The monastery and infirmary for the circle are close together near the peak of the mountain, and bless the rest of the city.

Military

The Dýrians are largely a pacifist peoples, and as such rely on warding and protection magic provided by the Shepard's circle, causing any individual to enter the city to be clouded with a sense of peace and welcoming. Despite this, they do keep and train a force of monks and rangers on call to protect the city should harm ever come to it.
