The Double Header’s purpose is to foster a sense of community, providing a safe haven for socializing, entertainment, and support. Its dual nature, with a gay bar on one side and a lesbian bar on the other, ensures that all patrons can find a space that resonates with their identity, while the shared patio and upstairs loft create opportunities for connection and camaraderie across the spectrum.
Alterations
Transforming a two-family home into the Double Header required thoughtful renovations to preserve its charm while accommodating its new purpose. The left side of the house, now the gay bar, features a cozy yet lively atmosphere with a polished wooden bar, plush seating, and vibrant artwork celebrating queer culture. The right side, the lesbian bar, exudes a warm and inviting ambiance, with comfortable booths, soft lighting, and a curated collection of books and memorabilia. Both sides are connected by a spacious, beautifully landscaped patio, adorned with fairy lights and comfortable outdoor furniture, creating an inclusive space where everyone -- queer or straight -- is welcome to mingle and enjoy the fresh air.
The upstairs loft, designed for queer individuals not seeking romance, offers a serene retreat from the bustling bars below. This tranquil space is furnished with cozy reading nooks, art stations, and meditation areas, providing a peaceful environment for reflection and creativity. Large windows allow natural light to flood the room, and the walls are adorned with inspiring artwork from local queer artists. The loft serves as a haven for those looking to connect on a deeper, more introspective level, fostering a sense of belonging and community.
History
The Double Header’s history is as colorful as its patrons. Established in 1964 by the visionary couple, Evelyn and Margaret Sinclair, the Double Header began as a modest gathering place for the local LGBTQIA+ community. Over the decades, it evolved into the beloved institution it is today, weathering societal changes and becoming a symbol of resilience and pride. The Sinclairs’ legacy lives on through the vibrant events and welcoming atmosphere that define the Double Header, making it a cornerstone of Avalon’s cultural landscape.
