Goblin

Got a new shipment from Darak today. Says he found out how to make something called Alchemist's Fire. It burns hotter than anything I've ever seen. Though, it does have a green color to it but its most likely just a joke from Darak. Can't wait to start selling this across the city.
— Merchant Journal Entry the day before a goblin agent of the Elder set off the Alchemist's Fire, blowing up an entire district of Cadehall.

Basic Information

Growth Rate & Stages

Goblins are another race that is expected to grow up fast due to the conditions they lived in. Goblins reach adulthood by age 8 physically and hopefully mentally and follow a similar age progress to other races, growing old until they pass away near 60.

Civilization and Culture

Major Organizations

  • The Jade Tribes: The origin of the Goblins to the east of Edrinia's Spine. They serve as herbalists and alchemists alike making concotions of death and life as the tribes clash with each other and the Elder-controlled ones throughout the region.
  • The Crystalian Empire: Just as they accepted their culture, the Empire hired Goblins to work in their military and even live amongst them as citizens. It was Goblin sappers that brought down the walls of Ravengulf down and helped with the destruction of the Aerin fleet that attempted to sail into the heart of Crystalia during the Rose Prince's Rebellion.
  • The Dakoblin Holds: The origin of Goblins on the continent of Alus. The goblins of these lands are a people who have only known the structures and fortresses of the mountains. They are hardier than Gobilns of other lands thank to this.

History

The goblins grew up alongside the Bugbear and Hobgoblins in both the Jade Coast and the Dakoblin mountains. As the smallest of the three goblinoid races, the goblins learned to lean on the other two goblinoid races to protect themselves. The Bugbear's strength and aptitude for stealth combined with the Hobgoblin intellect of warfare and strength proved to be a good shield for the Goblins.

Over the centuries, Goblins developed their own role. While they weren't as strong as the Bugbear or as militarily rigid as the Hobgoblins, they had their own ingenuity. Alchemy and Goblins became synonymous for tribal Goblinoids as they created poisons and potions integral to the survival of the tribes. When a tribe needed to face off against a large monster encroaching on their home or even the stone fortresses of Dwarves and Elves, Goblin alchemy was what they relied on.

This was a trait that helped them fit in when they left their homelands to find a place for themselves in the rest of Acria. While Gnomes and Tykriels were believed to be the best of the alchemical arts, there are stories of Goblins who would show them up and make them pay for their hubris. This was one of the reasons groups would rely on them in warfare. However, not all wanted to rely on alchemy and branched out into other roles such as thieves, assassins and mercenaries, just like their goblinoid cousins. In the end, all these talents made them an asset when the Elders came.

The Elders couldn't pass up the opportunity to get more thralls and dominated a section of the Jade Coast and a plot of land near the Dakoblin mountains. The goblins in those regions now work for the Elders despite the defeat of their forces back at the beginning of the Eternal Age. They also sneak into other territories, spying and causing chaos for their masters. It is because of this that people don't trust Goblins as much anymore. It has gotten to the point to where even Goblinoid tribes and kingdoms will suspect each other of working for the enemy, always paranoid of a blade in the shadows or a poison in their supplies. And so the goblins hunt for these corrupted brethren to put them down and clean their good name.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Goblins are more likely to trust a Bugbear or Hobgoblin than any other race. Since the three species developed side-by-side, Goblins believe they have a bond even if the other two don't think so. Regardless, when a Goblin is in trouble, the other two goblinoids are the first ones they run towards.

In the east, the Goblins and Dwarves have a bit of a rivalry since Dwarven holds have been assaulted by the Goblins in the southeastern side of the Jade Coast and Edrinia's Spine. At the same time, the Orzin Gnomes and Tykriels have had to deal with Goblin incursions to steal their knowledge, resulting in short term conflicts many times over the centuries.
