Triton

The Tritons are an aquatic race native to the plane of water and ice, Wavum. Due to Elemental meddling, they and their rivals were transported to Avestra in large numbers. Now, they serve as guardians of the sea, hunting monstrous and eldritch creatures that would prey upon the denizens of the sea and those who sail across its surface. 

Basic Information

Anatomy

Triton are bipedal humanoids who look distinctly similar to humans and Vedalken. Howver, they have webbed fingers and toes as well as fins on the sides of their calves. Additionally, they have gills on the side of their necks that sink into their necks and close when they are above water, allowing them to breath air as well as in water.

Due to their time in the deep seas of Wavum and Avestra have given them the ability to see in the dark in shades of grey.

Civilization and Culture

History

The Triton are a people who's story begins on the plane of water in Wavum. It was teaming with life beneath the waves, in forms that are similar to the depths of Avestra in their seas. There were many groups who called it their home: Merfolk, Sahuagin, and the Tritons. Tritons kept the balance between the two former groups, even when they had to deal with meddling elementals here and there. Merfolk and Sahuagin were always at each other's throats, due to the latter preying on the former. The Tritons pushed the Sahuagin to prey on other creatures and served as keepers of the peace.

But as the Elementals showed the mortals of Avestra how to summon them, it was only a matter of time before the barriers between Wavum and Avestra were strained. When a Leviathan, a powerful and destructive Elemental, was summoned to Avestra for a brief moment, it tore open a portal that pulled many of the three species into the realm. With new folk to feed on, the Sahuagin spread like a cancer across the seas and the Merfolk and Triton spread to try and stop them. This underwater war has raged for millennia and shows no signs of stopping even with the aid of aquatic species such as the Sea Elves and Genasi.

Things only got worse as the Elders arrived and with them, Aberrations such as the Abeloth who were perfect for the sea. And with these creatures by the side of the Sahuagin, they have begun to push back against the Tritons and their allies. Even with the Elders gone, their influence still stirs in the seas as the Tritons fight against their forces. For a Triton, their life is always preparing for a battle against their enemies, whether they be in the sea or festering on the land above.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Triton view Merfolk and Sea Elves as their allies against the villains beneath the sea. The other surface dwellers are viewed with a neutral stance, thanks to the Tortles serving as ambassadors alongside the other two species. Meanwhile, the Elders, the Abeloths, and the Sahuagin are viewed as their most hated rivals due to the atrocities they've commited, which many Triton still hold as grudges.
