The Cataclysm
After many centuries of growth and progress, Avress experienced a massive apocalyptic event known as the “Cataclysm” which left half of the world uninhabitable. The event that most historians know as the Cataclysm was actually a series of natural disasters and massive explosions that tore apart most of the major cities in the world. No one really knows what happened but there are many theories. Some believe that the gods punished the mortal world. Some say that one warring faction or another was the cause while others think that the devastation was inevitable and the world cracked under the strain.
Regardless of the cause, the continent of Taigash suffered immense damage as cities exploded, storms of magical energy ravaged the land, and planar rifts opened up to allow monsters of every nightmarish variety to spill over the land. However, the destruction was not limited to Old World; Beltiar suffered as well. The eastern coastline was battered by earthquakes and tsunamis and the city of New Borlan was left in ruins. The city of Westmarch was the site of a massive rift to Shadowfell and the area was overrun by darkness and death. The agricultural city of Korun was blasted by a massive explosion of heat that vaporized every living thing within the city and hundreds of more miles around it leaving behind a vast lifeless desert.
