Drifting Town of Driftville

Getting good directions for this one is difficult.
— Artur Neha, Traveler

Overview

As the name may imply, Driftville is an underwater town that drifts with the currents of the Occulus Sea. It is one of the best known underwater settlements known to the inhabitants of dry land. This is partly due to the town's inhabitants engaging in trade activity with whatever port the town finds itself nearest to. Driftville is largely inhabited by Tritons and Merfolk.

On a Great Floating Boulder

The town is built on a large piece of land, really a gigantic boulder, that had been dislodged from the mainland sometime during The Great Collapse. This land was never able to float on the surface, instead floating beneath it and going with the underwater currents. Why it never crashes into the shore is a combination of luck, the course of the currents, and the sense of survival of its inhabitants. They have developed some means of influencing the course their town takes on its journey around Occulus.   It is unclear when it was claimed so that a town could be built on it. Of course, everyone seems to have a different explanation for why the town was built on a moving piece of underwater rock at all.

Geography

The geography surrounding the town changes depending on where it is. It can be near shallows during spring, and then it can be floating over an abyss in autumn.

Note(s) from the Archivists:

Question, is Driftville always in range of Centrum? - Archivist Enna    In a sense, but their island travels closer to the continent proper than to Visus Island. That hasn't stopped them from sending traders to us on occasion. - Archivist Taenya Naïlo
