Magic Malaise

If you've never had it, then you cannot quite imagine it. It's more than simple exhaustion of magic, it is like you are estranged from the hidden threads that bind the world together.
— Sanev Vensandoral, Archmage
Constant practice of magic risks sending one into a special type of malaise known perhaps originally as "magic malaise." It is a condition wherein one feels utterly drained of interest in the magical arts. More than that, those stricken with magic malaise are unable to perform even the simplest of spells. The malaise often occurs after one practices either a powerful spell or a series of spells in rapid succession, and it doesn't happen all at once. The use of a powerful spell is more of a triggering event that sends one on a slow decline of enthusiasm and ability to exercise magics. The effects of this condition extends beyond the use of magic as one slowly loses interest in all things, as if they grow weary of life. It is as if the afflicted person becomes a walking Magic Deadzone.   While rare, the condition was an incurable one until recently...

Sanev's Cure

Archmage Sanev Vensandoral studied the condition for years until he discovered the mechanism by which it occurs in 1175AGC. The details of his discovery are complex, but the brief summary of it is this: Magical malaise occurs when one severs connection with the arcane forces that pervades the universe. The cure turns out to be rather straight-forward: reconnect the individual with the arcane forces.   Sanev then spent years trying to discover a trigger by which this connection may be established and allowed to heal. He discovered a way to do this in 1245AGC. The trick was that to reestablish the arcane connection one must endure a magical event identical in power level to that of the one that severed the connection in the first place - in reverse. That is to say, instead of magic being expelled from the individual the individual must absorb it. How this is done is very specific to the individual in question. Much must be known of the event that triggered the disconnection in the first place if its elements are to be emulated. In addition, certain potions would need to be utilized depending on the condition of one's body at the moment of disconnect.   While this process can work if performed correctly, it is still complex. Sanev continues to research the issue in the hopes of developing a simple potion or spell that can greatly reduce the complexity and cost of curing the malaise.
