Rhyfedd River
Rhyfedd defies my understanding of how rivers are supposed to work. This river flows uphill. Wild magic is clearly involved in the strange behavior of this particular river, but the exact nature of the magic is a matter of debate. This river flows to the peaks of the Bleu Massif, located on Continental Island of Lluvia, from the Occulus Sea in the north.
A River with no Delta
As the river flows uphill, it produced a strange effect in that nothing gets deposited at the end of this river. No river delta is present. There is only a slowly but surely increasing deepness at the mouth of the river. The unexpected shift in current can also be dangerous to unaware sailors as evidenced by the remains of several boats at the rivers entrance. It can be argued that the three smaller would-be-tributaries-under-normal-other-circumstances that split at the very base of the massif counts as Rhyfedd's delta.I try to understand all that I come across... but I must've left drained that curiosity at the Feu Wood because I'm skipping this one.
Three Peaks
The end points of Rhyfedd lies at the top of the Bleu Massif's three northern most peaks. These mountains are growing slightly taller year after year due to the river bringing in material from its base and depositing them at each end point. A whirlpool is present at the summit of these three peaks which drains to depths unknown- possibly into another realm. There are records of those who have entered these pools and attempted to reach the bottom only to never return. That is, aside from a strange species of spectral fish, called the Rhyfedd Salmon, that seem to enter into and out of the whirlpools without concern.Esoteric Role for Lunarians
By the abundance of lamps placed along the western shores of the river, it is apparent that the Lunarians consider this river special in an esoteric sense. Exactly what ritual is performed concerning the river or what it means exactly few outsiders have been privileged to learn. Perhaps this ritual concerns a conception of flowing upwards to the celestial heavens?Strange places give rise to strange stories.
River of Youth?
There is a story- of dubious origins- that tells of one who became younger by swimming along the Rhyfedd river up to the massif. Many have attempted to repeat this feat, but results have been disappointing so far.Even the Waterfall Flows in Reverse
There are waterfalls along this river as the massif is known for its steepening slopes as one travels higher and higher. The water in the Rhyfedd waterfalls rises upward thereby never slowing its pace on its journey to the whirlpools at the three peaks.

Strange Rainfall
Observers have noted that when rain nears landing in the river it seems to turn in the direction of the river's flow. Tests have been recorded showing that when one pours water into Rhyfedd the water's stream bends in the direction of the river's flow before it finally merges.Common Flora

Notes from the Archivists:
So... what is considered upstream or downstream? Would the terms have to be reversed in this case? - Archivist Enna Honestly, with everything magic an accomplish any goes. Use those terms however you wish. - Archivist Bob What terms do you use I wonder? - Archivist Enna I'll go for "here" and "there" for this one. - Archivist Bob What exactly does "here" or "there" mean in this case? Which is upstream? - Archivist Enna Good question. - Archivist BobRemove these ads. Join the Worldbuilders Guild
A good article, well written. I like that it goes against the natural order of things. Wild Magic indeed. Another realm deep beneath the whirlpool, interesting. A well deserved Like/Fave from me. Aemon
Thank you for this kind comment! :D
