Xeta Magocracy

They were once a kind and quiet kind of people. But now, their thoughts are as impenetrable as the darkest night. Perhaps that is to the benefit of the sanity of our own minds.
— Sanev Vensandoral, Master Mage

Overview

The Xeta Magocracy elevates the mages of their society at the expense of non-magic users. But these mages are not like those elsewhere in the continent. Xetan mages immerse themselves into the morally questionable realm of dark magic, a kind of magic that twists the laws of the world to the will of the user. In addition, Xetan mages have come to believe that they alone can tame the unpredictable and destructive nature of wild magic. The pursuit of both of these types of magic has earned Xeta scorn and condemnation from its neighboring states. As such, the Xeta Magocracy has slowly become an isolationist state.   The Xeta Magocracy is located on the eastern coast of the Continental Island of Lluvia.

Reveling in Darkness

The settlements of the Xeta Magocracy have erected magical fields that shroud their cities in perpetual night. The Xetans once the night sky as something beautiful and that the light of the sun as an unwelcome blinder. In recent years however, the Xetans have begun to shun the light of the moon and stars as well, preferring their own lights and the darkness more and more. As such, their cities have become growing voids that dot their landscape. The dark fields that shroud their cities from all the "bright and harsh" light has also served as a barrier to outside eyes. Many are growing concerned at what may be developing behind Xetan veils.

The Pursuit of Dark Magic

The people of Xeta indulge in the darker aspects of using magic which includes necromancy. In 1166AGC, Xeta used the recently deceased to bolster their ranks against an invasion from the Grand Duchy of Východ. Their defense was successful, but it shocked their neighboring states into reducing relations with the magocracy.   The undead that survived the fighting became a continuing problem for Xeta and its diplomatic relations with other sovereign states. To this day, there are Xetan Undead that will find their way to an isolated village and cause great trouble. Some of these villages have become a damned village overnight. Other times, the recent undead will find their way to a previously dormant Ancient Ruin and arouse the ancient undead there. The citizens of Vychod in particular have had to suffer the occasional undead incursion presumably caused by a Xetan Undead. The fact that this has been a problem for so long has led many Vychod citizens to conclude that Xeta is intentionally sending undead over the border.   It is likely that this is one of the key issues that will cause an all out war between Xeta and Vychod.   Xetan undead have even been a problem for the Kingdom of Vhara to the west. However, Vhara has been more concerned with the imminent invasion coming from the Kingdom of Helia of late.

The Pursuit of Wild Magic

What the magocracy's neighbors take issue with, the Xetans are trying to master wild magic. They believe that as this dangerous type of magic is prevalent in the world that it must be mastered if one wants to master the world. As such, Xetan mages have tried to quell Magic Storms or to direct such storms during the height of their chaotic energy. There are certain indications that Xeta may have seen some success in their endeavors as well as some setbacks.   Xeta's official pursuit of mastering wild magic has made it a candidate for sanctions by neighboring sovereign states. The fear of another The Great Collapse is part of the concern on this issue as well as fear that Xeta may obtain some kind of edge militarily.

Opinion of Lunaria

The Xeta Magocracy once viewed the Queendom of Lunaria as their direct kin on the other side of the continent. It was once hoped that the two states would unite. However, Lunaria has become increasingly wary of Xeta's increasing indulgence in dark and wild magic. Xeta in turn has come to view Lunaria as timid and cowardly. To put it another way, Xeta views Lunaria as a state that is ultimately wasted potential. This has a lot to do with the rising power of the Kingdom of Helia and Lunaria's always defensive posture against that power. It is rumored that Xeta has sent agents meant to encourage Lunaria to become more open to aggressive approaches to world issues.

Note(s) from the Archivists:

I wonder what will happen if the Xetans actually do master wild magic. - Archivist Edward   Then their enemies may be in trouble. Of course, one of the fundamental facets of wild magic is that it cannot be tamed, so the Xetans may be on a fool's errand. - Archivist Taenya
