The Ritual of Sunset
Also known as 'The Departing Ritual', citizens of Kaldona must take part when they exit the settlement. Here they drink a concoction that puts them in a daze and wipes most of their memory. They are then lead outside, to a safe location, and nursed back to full mental and physical health.
This ritual is vital considering the callous citizens and settlements that exist nearby, in The Luwani Desert , often consisting of slavers and cutthroats.
History
Originally Kaldona existed on their military and desert camouflaging abilities, but when someone was caught by slavers outside and tortured to reveal entrance to the city, they were beset by invaders and only just managed to keep their home, many casualties and captured citizens later. Although it took time to rebuild, the ritual was planned immediately as a measure to defend against history repeating itself.
Execution
When a citizen wishes to leave they must fill out an application form that goes to the leader of Kaldona as well as the departures embassy. They are expected to wait a month, and if, after that time, they still wish to leave they can sign to finalize this. After two days, time meant to tie up loose ends, say goodbye and prepare (As well as a final-final chance to make sure they want to proceed), the ritual takes place at a specific platform near the edge of bubble.
Participants
Citizens of Kaldona and the Sunsworn take part. It's not uncommon for family members to say goodbye, as it is sort of a death, considering these departed cannot return without finding their way back.
Special note: There is a profession in Kaldona dedicated to taking trade goods to a specific trading post and from the city. These caravan members do not have to participate in the ritual, but are under extremely strict guidelines, including not being able to talk unless absolutely necessary. That particular exception is done during the many sand storms, to help cloak their travel. Any deviation from the rules will have the Sunsworn killing them to protect the settlement. Those who wish to join the caravan are aware and pledge an oath to uphold these rules and penalties prior to their enrollment.
Observance
Anytime a citizen or citizens wish to leave they can, however this is extremely rare as it often means leaving behind their life and family and braving the outside, hostile world.
