Beasts

The identification of beasts was once an archaic headache due to the multitudinous life forms on Aypavoc shifting physical traits. Circa year 340, an Aikawa scholar and zoologist developed the Hir'ta Classification Method, which has been widely used ever since.   The Hir'ta Method dictates that the identity of any creature can be determined through four factors: Birth Species, Region, Birth Season, and Confliction.   Animals mate based on their birth species: what they looked like Unconflicted. Thus, a Varisian tiger cannot mate with a Consecrated bird, even if they have many overlapping physical characteristics, but a Varisian lizard can mate with a Fastidious lizard, despite appearing like two completely different species. It was decided that the Conflictable creatures would be defined by six families: felines, canines, ungulates, avians, rodents, and reptiles. Field researchers are recommended to work backwards, finding the eye color of a creature, its corresponding animal family, and subtracting those mutated traits to approximate the birth form of highly Conflicted creatures. Fish and insects which are not affected by Confliction are discluded by the Hir'ta Method.   Region is not an end-all-be-all, but favors certain traits over others. Akagawa's blistering heat and wide plains favor large, short-furred ambush predators and powerfully speedy herbivores, while colorful omnivorous species keep to the blazewood copses. Yuanlin's snowy tundra favors long-furred hibernal beasts, while its shadowy forests support all manner of life. The vibrant jungles of Eldwood allow small arboreal species to proliferate, though behemoths certainly stalk the forest floors. The isolated sky islands of Atonement are home to some of the least documented and most genetically divergent species, but few humans have ever braved them and lived to report their findings.   Birth season determines the color of a creature's eyes and its possible changes due to Confliction. See the symbolism chart for colors and animal families.   Finally, Confliction determines the degree to which a creature has developed extraneous traits.   Thus, the proper terminology for a phoenix would be 'a highly Consecrated Akagawan avian'. Common folk, however, will still call it a phoenix.   Here are some example creatures.
