Tucleuil (TOO-cloo-ill)

A tucleuil is a flattened mobius strip, often made of gold or gilt, with multiple cracks engraved into it. It is the primary symbol used by members of the Maionene Temple. The loop represents Maion's perfect eternal creation, while the cracks represent The Shattering and humankind's sin in using Zolgar's invention, magic.

Usage

I never leave the house without my tucleuil. I wouldn't feel the same!
— Maionic Believer
There is always a large tucleuil hanging on the interior wall of a Temple, above the altar. These large symbols are generally carved wood with a gold leaf overlay, or gilt painting in poorer areas. One popular rumor is that the tucleuil at the Great Temple in Lower Maurac is made of solid gold. Priests and worshippers also use smaller tucleuils in their personal devotions at small household shrines. It is also an extremely popular choice of pendant, in any medium. Priests wear silver necklace chains with a large tucleuil pendant as part of their standard regalia. Most worshippers have at least one pendant necklace to wear, even if it is only made of wood, horn or bone.

History

Henceforth, the symbol known as the Tucleuil shall be the primary and official symbol of the Maionene Church.
— Council of Narleme, 167 AS
The tucleuil was codified as the official symbol of the Maionic faith during the Council of Narleme in 167 AS. This is the first recorded example of the modern tucleuil. In fact, the name "tucleuil" was coined during the Council. There is no direct translation of the word, but it is derived from root words in the Oacuni language, the official language of the Temple. A transliteration might be "symbol-sin-great," or literally "great sin symbol".   The use of the mobius strip to represent creation, however, dates back to the Age of Magic and beyond, where it was also used as a devotional symbol. Survivors of the Shattering brought the practice of wearing this symbol forward into the Rebuilding. We have no records, however, of what this symbol was called. The addition of cracks to the loop is a post-Shattering addition, but it is unclear when that modification started or became popular.
