The Rule of Five is a charmingly archaic list of rules compiled by
Ezeki
which the
Serayin agreed to live by together when they were all children. These rules were collaboratively agreed upon in order to ensure that the Serayin would always support each other and not fall apart due to petty arguments and disagreements.
It has since taken on a life much larger than its creators ever intended, becoming a defining piece of Aravun Yashelin cultural and legal literature. Nowadays, the
Ezekoru practices and enforces the Rule of Five during meetings of a political or legal nature. Although the Rule of Five began with the Serayin, every Yashelin from the eldest to the youngest is expected to known and follow these rules even today.
Although the scope of the rules has changed significantly over the years in response to a larger and more complex world, the spirit of the original sentiments behind the Rule of Five lives on in its adherents.
Rule One: Never Sleep Alone
Original Context
Ezeki is a notoriously insecure sleeper who hates sleeping without a companion beside it. When it was a child, it would refuse to sleep in protest if it was all alone. Therefore, the original sentiment of the first rule was literal.
Deeper Meaning
In the meantime, the first took on a weight metaphorical meaning.
Never Sleep Alone serves as a reminder that all Yashelin share a sacred bond that should never be broken, e ven the most dire of times and harshest of disagreements. Although all people are unique individuals, this rule represents the significance of the collective.
"It should still be literal and I stand by that! Sleepover, anyone? Your families are invited if they want to come, too!"— Ezeki
Rule Two: Never Sleep Hungry
"... Please? I'll make soup for everyone! I have some Uyam Fruit wine, too. If we all pitch in, it could be a sleepover potluck!"— Ezeki
Rule Three: Never Sleep Angry
"I refuse to believe that everything we've been through has pulled us all apart completely. We can't figure it out if we're not together, so come to my sleepover."— Ezeki
Rule Four: Never Sleep Injured
"You know where you could see a doctor? At our sleepover. Kidding, Rafa. Seriously, though. If something's wrong, come over for a sleepover and I'll help you."— Ezeki
Rule Five: When Awake, Choose Curiosity!
"For the love of the Ida, if none of those worked, just get out of your house and come sleep in mine for a night. Shake things up a little. You never know, it might be fun."— Ezeki
What a fascinating foundation for a culture!
