Milton F Merrygold

Milton F Merrygold is nothing if not memorable. A short, thin halfling dressed proudly in the traditional uniform of The Ring Master. Milton sports a monocle he has no use for, a tophat contributing to a third of his height and a twirling handlebar mustache. Milton is the founder and mayor of the teleporting carnival known as Gyran or La Gran Carnival.

Milton is an exceptionally memorable man. Likeable too. Though, even his confidants struggle to distinguish his honest self from his public persona. "His character inseparable from his character" as some joke. Whilst those who live with The Ringmaster may find his innate "on"-ness tiresome, its effect is undeniable. Milton F Merrygold is a household name and his silhouette: instantly recognizable. Identifying and intelligently utilizing the publics obsession with character, he was able to build Gyran from nothing. Milton knew all along you have to sell the mayor, not the town. And there were two things to sell of course. Certainly El Gran Carnival required marketing, public attention and a general buzz about it. But the same went for the internal culture. Milton was selling an artistic paradise, where concerns of food and shelter could be forgotten in place of creative pursuits. Gyran is the communist society Milton dreamed up when he was but 13; artists living and collaborating together, their earnings not going to personal luxuries but the betterment of their community. An oasis from capitalism, where art can exist for arts sake. Of course, this reality never was fully realized, and the thrall of gold eventually overcomes us all and Milton became more infatuated than most. But do not judge Milton too harshly, as though he may be rich man with gilded eyes, he looks after his people.

Morality & Philosophy

As one might extrapolate from his name sake, Mr Merrygold is a monetarily motivated man. Whilst he is no guild master nor money grubbing thief, Milton makes most of his decisions based on profit. This has proven a viable strategy, and under Milton's management Gyran has flourished. Milton has very little opinion regarding the artistic value of the shows, shops and stalls in his town. Works that could be considered taboo or off beat raise no concerns with the ring master, provided they are successful. This is fantastic for artists hoping to push the envelope, but problematic for those who are "before their time." In any case, Gyran is an expensive town to run and Milton has expensive taste. Therefore, if you want to earn Milton's favor you need only earn him gold.

Known Languages

Milton speaks an absurd number of languages with ease. He consistently surprises even his oldest friends when revealing fluency in yet another obscure tongue. Yet, whilst Elven, Dwarven and even draconic dance from his lips with grace, Milton never quite got the knack of Common. Some believe he refused to properly learn the language, rebelling against the humanistic monoism suggested by the dialect. Others assume its all part of the performance; His distinctly foreign accent certainly brings some exoticism to the figure of the ring master. Milton himself claims the blandness of the language disagrees with him, but he tries his best.
