Water Lilith

Liliths are small, mischievous creatures. The word 'lilith' literally means demon. There are four types of liliths; air, fire, earth, and water.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Like all liliths, the water lilith has a small human-like frame. The bottom part of their body is similar to a dolphin tail. Their tail flukes move in an up-and-down motion and this helps them to propel forward. Their pectoral fins are used for steering and braking. And their dorsal fin is used for stabilisation. All of them have light or dark blue hair. Their skin is often grey-ish near their tail but their face and arms are paler with a slight blue or green tinge. The deeper the live, the darker their hair and skin is.

Ecology and Habitats

The water liliths generally live in the twilight zone but some live deeper in the midnight zone.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Water liliths are omnivorous, they eat small fish, shrimps, crustaceans and seaweed.   Water liliths that live deeper in the ocean have adapted to eat different foods. Since they're bigger, they can hunt squids, jellyfish and octopus.   They usually hunt in groups or 'pods'.

Behaviour

The water lilith is a manipulative species. Unlike their ethereal mermaid relatives, they cause havoc in the waters.   They participate in a game similar to 'play-hunting' which is played by their fiery counterparts, the Fire Lilith. To them, 'arena' is a brutal game that they participate in where they catch small fish, and fight them in a ring. Sometimes they take on baby dolphins, narwhals, whales or other aquatic mammals as babies. This means that 4 - 16 water liliths fight while the rest of the pod watches and cheers. They fight to the death and the fighters consume the corpse when they win.

Civilization and Culture

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Most of the languages they speak consist of emitting clicks and whistles, and echolocation. They also use physical gestures by moving in specific patterns, making symbols with their hands, or blowing bubbles.   There are two main language groups:
  • Bluba - spoken by water liliths that live in the twilight zone. (involves sounds and gestures)
  • Spann - spoken by water liliths that live in the midnight zone. (involves sounds and echolocation)

Ooh! I don't think I would want to run into one of these guys. I feel bad for the baby animals that get caught up in their "games." I like the reference in your opening to the demon Lilith (I'm guessing this is where the name comes from). I also like that you included geographical dialects in your communication system, as well as how those dialects are obviously influenced by the environment.

Thanks! I did in fact base the name of these creatures off of the demon Lilith because I've wanted to use the concept in my world somehow and I finally found the perfect opportunity.
