The Grey Peaks
For centuries among the twisting cliffs and ravines of the Grey Peaks the Eight Clans of the Dwarves have withstood every attempt by the humans of Felizeen to conquer them, leaving them the last free non human race on the continent. Having seen every other demi-human race get subjugated or exterminated has taught dwarves to become fiercely independent, scorning other demi-humans for their weakness. Dwarf architecture and industry is second to none in the known world, although no human has been allowed inside the fabled halls of the dwarf lords in centuries. Accounts from before human/demi-human conflicts talk of open caverns as large as whole fiefdoms carved out beneath the mountains and filled with treasure. Everything dwarves need to survive is grown or produced in these holds, making it impossible to starve or wait them out.
In addition to this the Grey Peaks stand at a vital junction point in Felizeen called the Mythril Road through which most long distance trading on the continent flows through. Although it grates on the human merchants, they can either pay the dwarves’ passage tolls or add months to their overall travel time and overhead. The dwarves have grown exceedingly rich from this, competing on even footing with mercantile guilds the world over. It is not uncommon to find at least one dwarf in practically every city and town you visit, searching for a new good or luxury item to bring home. A dwarf is usually safe no matter where he goes, for to kill a dwarf is to bring down the wrath of his whole clan. No country wishes to have their merchants barred from the mountain passes, and so punish dwarf-killers severely.
But the times are changing. With the Sundering and the growing of the Wastes the dwarves find themselves hard pushed unlike ever before. To their undying shame, 3 of the sacred dwarf halls have fallen in the aftermath of the great war. Zarazir and Barukthaz fell quickly to hordes of magical abominations from the Wastes, while Undazin magically sealed it’s doors to escape the same fate. None know at this time what has happened to them. To add insult to injury, recently Barukthaz was claimed by Drow (a race of elves previously unknown to humans) and it’s doors opened, leading to the discovery of the Underdark, a system of caverns and tunnels connecting the Dwarven Holds to undiscovered riches and kingdoms.
